frame brace

you should weld 1 on for sure anyway!! It will crack no doubt about it, and its cheap insurance for your stearing! remember- brakes, stearing, and tires keep you alive

I don’t think my I phrased my question right. ORD has two items that they sell. One is a reinforcement bracket to take the stress of the frame and the other is a weld on patch. My question is, is the weld on patch needed if the frame is not cracked or is only the bracket needed? Is it a waste of money or will it add additional strength, to also do the patch if the frame is not cracked?

Does any one have any pictures of there weld on braces along with the bolt on? Just wanted to get an idea of what they look like, or even a web site where i can find one would be cool. Thanks :doah:

does anyone have any pictures other than whats on the ORD site of the braces... i dont want to drop the coin on that when it looks so simple that i could just weld one up myself, i just need to see where they bolt into and how and such.. well atleast better pictures. thanks! mike

Run both. Cheap insurance.
The bolt in brace will improve steering feel even if the frame is ok.

Anything that adds stress to the steering will eventually crack the frame causing the wandering sensation.
I imagine over sized tires are the biggest culprit as I have seem many K5’s that have not really been off road with the cracked frame syndrome.
Best modification/repair yet. Both comfort and safety are vastly improved.

And add crossover steering to the mix and you change the direction of that huge stress on the frame to "side-to-side" instead of "front-to-back".

I have both after demolitioning my frame and radiator when the box ripped off......
Spent 8 hours straightening the frame and getting everything back to kosher with braces.

i used wrecked truk

i torched out the steering box section of another frame that was bent ground it down to nice smooth edges got it to fit used bolts in all four holes to locate it and welded it in haven't had any trouble. you just have to remember that when you weld on a frame to weld the horizontal seams never weld verticaly from top to bottom of your frame as this will cause it to weaken and it can bend at the vertical welds...the only time you should weld vertically on your frame is if you are repairing a crack and even then the weld should be ground down flush and a plate put over it welded along the top and bottom never weld down the ends. just good advise

the bolt in kit is also designed as a preventative maintanence item too. just cause your frame isn't cracked doesn't mean you don't need it.

I've had the bolt-in brace installed for several years but recently found the frame starting to crack (x-over, 38's, locker, lot's of wheelin'), so I now also have the weld-on kit.

ORD.. links everywhere on this site. I got mine 2 weeks ago.. helped my steering out!

I had just the bolt on brace and I ended up ripping the box off the frame. But in its defense I have 44s, a detroit and crossover. I will be putting on the weld on repair kit and Hydro assist, and a Borgeson shaft.--Eric

Do i have to have the steering box off to check for cracks?

I cant see any cracks on the frame around my steering box, but i haven't had it off the truck either.
