Has anyone ever taken out the polymaterial air filter that sits inside of the normal air filter? (thick steel mesh filter attached to the housing between the carb and for me my K&N) I was thinking that it would let more air in if it was out. Am I right? I know its not smog legal but just wondering...

Yes. It's filled with charcoal. Made for evaporating gas. it's held in with some VERY strong adhesive (at least in my case) You will make a mess, but be careful not to dent or bend the air cleaner trying to get it off. Heat from teh bottom would probably melt the adhesive, but you'd have to repaint it.

Cool... I was wondering what it really did. It makes for one heck of a heavy housing. I will look into pulling it tonight. Thanks for the help.

You live in CA... if you need to get it smogged, then keep it on there or the smog Nazi's will get you...

How can I miss you if you won't go away?

In that case, don't mess with it lol. They actually get that in depth down there to take your air cleaner apart??? (not that I'm doubting, just curious)

I took mine out with the torch - just a little heat around the bottom and it fell right off.

Well I used my mammas hair dryer to get it off and it worked:)
It took about 5 min. and using a nail puller it pried off.
I put all the air cleaner stuff back on and it runs slightly better.
We'll see... in the mileage....

Don't think you will see any gains (I didn't) but it can't be helping any, charcoal doesn't just keep absorbing forever : )

I haven't noticed much the past 2 days that I have taken it out.
It's a lot liter now! The K&N should do a good job of keeping
the dirt and other minerals out. It sure took alot of heat to break that silicon. ;#
Thanks for the info. KEN
