I'm looking to lift my 81 K5 blazer pretty soon, I've already order the shackle flip kit from diy4x for the rear. But I have not yet decided what im going to do for the front. I was considering the 52" springs in the front until I heard about the on road driveability problems due to not having enough castor. I'm trying to spend the least amount of money possible being a college student, but still want to have some nice flex and be able to have a good time in it on the weekends but not effect the drivability it being my daily driver. So now I'm looking to build up my own springs. Have any of you built yourself a bastard pack? What kind of springoff of what vehicles would you start looking at to use?

Had a buddy take a set of 52's, cut the eyes off the main leaf and bolt them to the main leaf of the front stock springs. I believe he ditched the overload. Got a bout 4" of lift too. It isnt the most flexiest setup, but it works.

BTW, he's swapping to 52's pretty quick here as well.

I have done bastard packs before. Takes alot of experimentation really.

One I did used toyota, Chevy, Ford, and Jeep leaves.

Others I have no idea what the leaves are from anymore, if they are the same width use em.

Don't have wide gaps between the end of one leaf and the other, and try to get the second leaf as far out to the eyes as possible to help prevent bending the main leaf

Thanks guys, I'll let ya know how it turns out. Hope to start on it this weekend. If ya can think of any other advice, let me know. I'm open to any suggestions.

Oh yeah, the only set of springs I have so far are from a Cherokee, I'm gonna see what I can do with those

you should be able to find a set of cheap used lift springs cheap.

cherokee leafs are going to be sagged out and not rated for as much weight as you need for a front of a truck.

if you start arcing the front chevy stock springs it'll pull the shackle even further forward. they are short to begin with.

I have looked around quite a bit for some used front lift springs. I havent had any luck finding them. Do you have any suggestions on where to start looking?

i did a bastard pack in my cherokee with some chevy half ton springs, i hauled alot of weight when camping so i used the chevy overload also. worked out well, still flexed, rode well, and gave me 2-3" lift.

im probably looking at doing a bastard pack in the front of my blazer also.

Whatever you do, dont use lift springs from a jeep for the front...

Sound odd?

Thats what I had on my first blazer when i bought it (they were 9" lift springs)... they are a poor choice for springs

thats my useless 2 cents
