Poor Winch Performance

I have a Mile Marker 12,500 lb hydraulic winch that runs off my Super AGR power steering pump. I was using the winch this weekend and I thought the winch would pull hard. With the vehicle on ashalt, not tires aired down, I was pulling against a immovable point the vehicle would not pull it self across ground. This was all done at engine idle.

Does revving the engine help the power steering pump push the hydraulic winch to pull harder? This is the first time I have used the winch to pull something hard, and was less than amazed. Any suggestions. A mechanic friend said that the device that creates vacuum (6.2 liter diesel) might have a small leak. It there a easy way to check line pressure, detect leaks, (except for puddles).

Leaking oil front of engine, lower oil pressure

82 Jimmy 6.2 liter diesel.

I am leaking some oil from the front of my engine, was going to start to eliminate. Could this be from the front engine crank seal? If so how hard is it to replace this seal?


Also my oil pressure on my guage is low, read about 14-15 psi according to the dash guage. Is this normal, or low, how hard is to replace the oil pump.

Can't answer your other questions, but if the oil pressure gauge is electric, they can be very inaccurate. I would check with a mechanical gauge.

Mile Markers seem to work ok. You should try it with the engine at better than fast idle though.
Unless the hydraulic motor is worn out, it should turn when the pressure hits it.
About the only thing that will stop it is a pressure relief set too low.

However, do remember the dirty little secret that all winch makers share.
That 12K is on the first wrap of the spool.
Every layer you put on reduces the amount of pull a lot.

Unhhh, you did have it in "low", right?
The top lever is the low/free lever, and the side lever is the high/free lever.

For pulling, the side lever should be in free, and the top lever in low. This gives you your 12k of pull.
If the side lever is in high, and the top lever is in free, then it maxes out at 2K. But it reels up faster.

Thanks for the info

I have the levers in the proper positions. I will try at a higher rpm in the future. I was not pulling on the last rap of the spool. The Super AGR pump is been ran less than a year. Do people moniter the power steering pressure regularly?

The oil pressure and leak was supposed to be a seperate post, I will repost properly.
