Well I got some Por15 I picked up a while back and never used. so I was thinkin about rust profing the truck. Well the stuff aint you UV whatever it is. So I was thinkin of painting the backside of the body panels. Would I have to topcoat it then or ?

Thanks

shouldn't need a top coat if its on the backside/inside of the panels. The UV protectant helps keep it from degrading from sunlight.

Alrite, Thanks

If I should need a topcoat, can I aplly it right over the POR15 or is there something specail i need to do?

Check their site as well but IIRC you can paint right over it with anything.

Go read Colby's thread in the 73-87 forum about his new Blazer. He and I have discussed it and the proper way to use it a lot.

I went trough it all and I am still kinda lost. What else do I need to get? there is no rust what I am gonna be painting, its just to prevent rust. Also I was gonna paint the frame too. I was thinkin for the frame to use eastwood Chassis Black. Should I use POR15 under it or could i just use chassis black. Cause I only got a quart of POR.

here is a pic of the frame all the frame is like this except the front which still looks black color.

If you read his thread than you saw my comments on the Eastwood stuff. Not a fan.

POR15 requires all 3 steps of their system to work correctly for sure. It's like Herculiner or any other paint system...prep, prep, prep, and follow the instructions...then prep some more.

I have NEVER used anything like this before so I dont know much about it. I read over the build thread, I musta missed about what you said about eastwood.

In your opion, what would be the best way to rust proff the body and paint the frame and axels? I am going for a smooth look.

Don't be fooled by the info that comes with the POR-15. You can't "Paint Over Rust" like they say. You have to buy at least three products to have any hope of it staying on for very long. You need the "Prep step" or some equivalent cleaner, the metal-ready (acid with zinc in it) and the POR-15. Before you even get to the products you have to clean off ALL dirt, rust, etc. Sandblasting is the best, but may not be practical.

Also, you have to completely cover stuff with it. Rust creeps underneath it from any edge that is open. It's basically a plastic (urethane) coating. I have pulled pieces off whole with my hand a couple of years later. Other things that were completely encapsulated have help up pretty well.

I disagree I have used POR 15 alot and just painting right over rust works extrememly well. Hard part is the surface needs to be clean. Just for kicks on a frame I did I cleaned the whole thing really well down to bare metal then sprayed it with water let it sit for a month spraying it with water occasionally. Rust took a hold on the metal but the surface stayed clean enough to just wipe down. Well the vehicle that I did that on ( a sami) still has a mighty nice looking frame. That was 8 years ago. The cleaner the metal the harder time it has it seems to me.

So if you can get the surface clean and rusty it works really well, you leave etiehr

You are definately right about encapsulating the thing though

That's kind of my point. They make it sound like you just pop open a can, go at it and it lasts forever. It actually sticks better to steel that was rusty than new steel, but you still want to get as much rust off as possible. Rust contains moisture and oxygen because it's porous.

I've come to like Magnet Paints' Chassis Saver. Seems to work as well as POR15 with less issues. I'm going to be using it from now on.

As these guys said it's very much about prep work and cleanliness.

The Chassis Saver just seems to be a bit more forgiving. I still do all the prep work but it seems to just come out better. Haven't had any peeling issues or anything with it either.

Topcoat...for the undersides? Some good black spray paint.
