I'm about to dump some cash on gears and wanted some feedback on the quality of the PORC gears. They say are made in USA and have a special for front and rear gearsets with install kit for $550. Seems like a decent deal if the gears aren't crappy.

Cool. One more though...

I understand the ARB lockers do not require me to use the old case\carrier (or spider gears obviously). I'm switching ratios and have hit the carrier break and don't want to buy a new carrier if I don't have to.

One one more. Some gears are built for strength and are kinda noisy. How are these?

I don't think I would order anything through them right now. They were just banned from being a vendor on Pirate due to tons of bad feedback. I ordered my winch through them back in early 2006 with no problems but after all the bad of late I doubt I will order from them again. It does suck because I did want to order a set of 5.13's.

I just ordered a set of shocks from them(called them up) and the person that I spoke to (cant remember) was extremely knowledgable and helpful. Got the shocks in a very timely manner. I can say i had a wonderful buying experience. Thats my 2 cents.

MUst be, I am lucky I have hit every time. I have bought gears from them in the past & questioned the brand. They told me they would be a name brand, but would not say. I got a spicer gear in a PORC box.

my friend and I got gears and install kits from PORC. he actually called them and asked about what PORC gears are. hes like "oo just order the "PORC" gears. they r just american made gears from yukon or richmond or other good american companies in PORC boxes" no import crap he said. and so far they work great. o ya, same with the "porc" install kits. all name brand american made,no import crap.

You can't just buy the "stronger, noisier" gears. Once you get into the 6.xx and 7.xx dana gears they will be noisy, they have to be to make them strong enough.

I've had great luck with PORC and will certainly continue to buy stuff from them.

Thanks, my question comes from seeing ads that say some gears vendors build them for strength and "may make more noise than brand x gear type". I'm just looking for a decent 4.56 gear that's about OEM strength.

PORC gears are good, I've installed a lot of them. In fact, the last set I installed (in a D30) were Spicer gears inside a PORC box.

Small update. Ended up giving PORC a try and am pretty happy. Gears, locker, and install kits all showed up within a week. The gear boxes do say "Made in Korea" under the PORC sticker, but I'm not sure I care enough to complain. The gears appear to be well made.

Crazy, I always thought that their stuff was all US made

And you won't know if they are "well made" or not until you try to set them up (well, if you can tell by looking at them they are REALLY poorly made).

Like I said before, I've setup a bunch of PORC gears and never had a problem. Keep us updated

I've got them setup pretty close with setup bearings so far (waiting on a inch-pound torque wrench).

The only thing I was surprised by is that the ring gear didn't need to be heated up or pressed on to fit onto the carrier. It's a close fit, but I can rotate the gear by hand to line up all the bolt holes. Could be a small carrier bore or big bore on the gear.

Being made in Korea isn't enough to make them bad especially since Korea is making their own cars now. I figure they at least have to sort of know what they're doing.

I've never had to heat the ring gear to get it onto the carrier (I've dealt with 25-30), I just start the bolts and then either press or pound the ring gear on (with a piece of wood).

And the Korean gears are probably fine, it depends on the standards of the company importing them.

I've dealt with a couple ring gear/carrier setups that you could slide on, never had a problem. Any noticeable side to side play would probably be an issue.

x2

The most trouble I have had was setting up a 7.5 10B. Had to stick the carrier in the freezer overnight and then it dropped right on.

Now had the pinion gear dropped right on like it was a setup bearing...then I'd be wondering about the quallity.

pirate is a bunch of stupid A$$ hates if you ask me thay way thay all bash each other for little stupid crap.

and i just got 2 master install kits with all timkin bearings/races . smokin deals also.

1 customer at my work needed a rear remaned in a dodge dakota with factory v8. he has been running back and forth from upstate ny to virgina all the time with no problems on porc parts.
