portable CO2 Tanks... Power Tank?

good lord that was long. PM me if you have any questions about this stuff... Thats open to everybody.

York

Ray: Would you be able to get and post up about a half dozen pics of your York setup? Like so many parts I have, I've got a York in my garage that just needs to have a fabbed mount welded up and installed along with all the accessories. Your install could give me some motivation and ideas. BTW, haven't noticed you around here before, check out the Pacific region forums. It, SOCKO, is a great bunch of guys who go on a lot of wheeling trips and have good times going a lot of places. Check us out over there and join us on the next trail run.

Moby, I do have some pics that I have at home I should be able to share with you. Depending on your set up, you can use two different brackets that would bolt up to your left side head and water pump. I would like to have more friend here, I was into Jeeps years ago. Although I have always had GMs, I never owned a 4X4 Chevy. I hope no one minds that we are changing the subject, or may I can start a new tread? I thought I was finished with my Jimmy but I decided on some more mods so thats why I haven't ventured out.

As far as the tanks go, I used to work at a nitrous shop and racers used these tanks as spares for the track or for home. They are alot cheaper than actuall nitrous tanks. The certification of the tanks are 5 years from the latest stamp on the tank. Alot of people sell these tanks to unsuspecting people that have no clue of that cert and get stuck with a useless tank. Although certifing a tank is about $45.00. Man that was long.

Ray, on my 400sbc i have removed the A/C pump and its accessories. Being that I have a full vert blazer, I don't need A/C. This means I will be mounting the York on the passanger's side and keep my Alt on the driver's side. And thanks, I'm looking forward to pics too.

I run a 20lb CO2 tank that I bought from a beverage distributor.
I use a static 150psi regulator, 50' goodyear rubber hose, and have mounted it to my wheelwell with a large fire extinguisher bracket.

I get about 12 complete fills from 12-35psi on my 35X12.5 tires.
I've taken it out into the marsh to run air tools building duck blinds, ran air tools on the trail side, and taken it in the house and to parties to push beer out of the kegs. Yeah, it's pretty versatile.

I agree, CO2 pressure fluctuates greatly with temperature. I got all fancy-pants and painted my tank, but would prob just do tank exchanges if I had to do it over again.

I've got the PT-15, and I've really been happy with it. My biggest reason was that I could move it from K20 to Jeep to trailer, haul it out to the field for stuff I couldn't reach with the air hose from the shop, etc. The versatility is great. I would consider exchange tanks if I had it to do over, but I get mine filled at a fire extinguisher place with no problems. Static pressure in the tank seems to vary between 400 and about 700psi, depending on pressure. I've used both CO2 and Nitrogen with the race team I was on, but 3000psi Nitrogen tanks make me nervous bouncing around on the trail.
I was cautioned by one of the welding supply places about aluminum tanks. He knew a guy that had a welder fall over on an Aluminum CO2 tank and it blew the service body to pieces and totalled the truck. Just a word of caution about where and how you mount those tanks.

These are the pics and hopefuly good info. The reason why I was going with the Co2 bottle was because I couldn't mount the York without removing my A/C. Then I found this bracket and went with it. The pic with the lower pump is out of a van. I needed clearance for fluid level checking.

The bracket on the other links is probably the one you will find and be easier to mount as you can see I had to modify my brackets. Belt adjustment will caome from 1 or 2 belt tensioners that the bracket has provisions for.
Here's the air manifold I made. Jimmy 010.jpg

I'll be going to the salvage yard to look for some goodies. I'll see if I can pick one up for you, if you would like one. Normally $15.00-$25.00

That's a great looking setup Ray. Now will your hood close properly with the york sticking up so High. I figured I was going to have to mount mine much lower than yours to clear my hood. I'll have to recheck. You just gave me some great motivation to get going on this. Don't worry about picking upa a bracket at this point but I really appreciate the offer. Since I removed my aftermarket a/c it looks like there is a well build custom a/c bracket that I will modify a bit and add to it to make it work well. Thanks for the pics and let me know about its clearence.

Clearance

Forgot to post the other pic of the clearance. For this perticular set up you will also need the thermostat housing and upper radiator hose from the same van. The upper hose runs over the top of the York and I have about 1/2" of clearance between the hood and hose.

my little brother has an old well pressure tank (the kind with the bladder) in his sas S-10 and he uses and old smog pump for his air supply and it works awsome

Ray, question. My york will be mounted in the same place as your alternator just because the way my engine compartment is setup. When you mounted your york did you just "eye ball" the pully allignment and did you oblong your holes in the mounting bracket to allow for allignment of the pullys? Also, I can't tell from the brackets, but what dose your bracket have/use for belt tensioning adjustment? Thanks

The alignment of the belts was right on, the bracket did come with some shims for the water pump and one for the head bolt. I have seen different size shims for these brackets but for my set up it was right on. Also, the alt. pully was changed to a double groove of a ford alt. When I pulled the bracket it had one belt tensioner but the actual bracket has tow spots for it.
See the two holes, one above the water pump and the other to the left of it.

Ray, or anyone else, would a SCUBA tank be a good tyoe to use for an OBA Tank? I found a real good condition with current cert today for $20. How would you use the valve that is currently on the tank and also what regulator would work if ther is one? Can the valve that is on there now be unscrewed and replaced with a valve that is on a beverage or CO2 tank? Let me know what ou all think. Thanks.

I use an 80 cubic foot aluminum SCUBA tank that I bought used at a dive shop they changed the valve to accept a screw in fitting (I think it is called a DIN fitting) that has npt (pipe) threads, I got a high pressure braided hose and a regulator from vendors at work. Tank pressure is 3600psi max so check your pressure ratings on anything between the tank and regulator. When I got my tank filled last the guy showed me a new style of valve that is like mine but has a removable insert to be able to use the divers primary regulator. I hope this helps.

Tim, is there anyway to get a picture of the regulator the guy switched out for you. Or a pic of the whole setup you have. Thanks.

I will tomorrow. I know the brand of regulator is a Fisher but I will have to try to get more info if you need it. The local dive shops also deal with the bouncing car types here and I am sure they do there to, so stop in and talk to the guy/girl at the counter and pick their brain. You will be visiting them for fillups so it doesn't hurt for them to get to know you.
