These Carr steps are simple and functional. I don't need a nerf and since it is a two door (Blazer), all you really need is something this size as a practical way to help get in and out of the lifted truck. I thought I could mount this with self tapping screws into the rocker box. Opinions please? Do you think two or three tapping screws would be strong enough?

If you've got a blazer with the torsion boxes still intact, it won't work.

If your wanting to mount it to the inner rocker on a truck, bad idea IMO.

You'd be inviting rust to come on in and camp out.

Besides the fact that over time, they'd break out cause 67-72 inners are only sheet metal.

If ya can't tell, I'm thinking it's not a super way to go.

I've got a Blazer. What is a torsion box? Is that also referred to as a rocker box? If so, my plan so to mount it to the bottom of that. Mine are intact and basically pristine.

Yes rocker box.

"Techincally", no, it's called the torsion box but typically 'referred to' as the rocker box.

On blazers, there's 4 parts in that area not just 2 like a truck has.
1) outer rocker
2) inner rocker
3) torsion rod
4) torsion box

If you do have pristine torsion boxes your very lucky and would be crazy to drill into them for steps IMO.

Supporting a step from the frame will last longer than drilling into sheet metal, they sold steps by the thousands for trucks that were drilled into the back side of the inner rockers that after time, only rusted out and fell off.

Hey, mine doesn't have rocktortioneer boxes on it. Wouldn't screw them up unless you plan to chop the ghetto out of it like i did. Build a rope ladder and stuff it under the seat when you get in...

So could someone point me in the direction of a truck step for a 1st gen? If not the Carr steps, then what? I need something! My kids are too short!

Wow. Brought this one back from the dead. Your best bet is to have some steps fabbed that tie into the frame...I personally like the slider style like 70Jimmy's...check this thread. You can do the steps without the cage btw.

I just lift 'em up, or she climbs up the tailgate when it's down. But sheetmetal screws would hold very long being inserted from underneath. They are not meant for structural stuff.

Wow, the cage in that link is crazy!:eek1:
I bet there's less tube in a NASA shuttle!
I thought about that, bolting or welding something to the frame, but I thought with all the blazers and trucks out there from 67 to 72, there HAD to be someone who had designed a step. Once again, I appear to be wrong...:(
I guess I'll have to go sell my plasma again to pay for that kind of fabrication. I was hoping there was a cheeper way, cause I'm still paying for the engine I broke!
Thanks guys.

one more reason why dfs kicks a$$

a little muddy, but

here it is... this was on the truck when i got it 6 years ago, i would guess it's damn close to original, and only 2 screws hold it on fine. i'd yank it off but the wife likes it, bigbadchev too.

spring loaded it colapses when not stepped on... and provides a good firm step. according to justin and the wife, i have never used it...

:haha::haha::haha:

Now that is exactly what I'm looking for! Those would be perfect. I will buy those from you if you ever want to sell them, Sir! Or, sell me one for my passenger side and keep one for yours? Or, if you ever see those anywhere else, can you give me a shout?

Only one in existence

I only have the one on the passengers side, and I'm not even gonna ask her. It's gotta stay there till something rips it off some day.

I can post up pictures and dimensions it shouldn't be hard or expensive to FAB one up.

Really? That would be great. I'm pretty sure that is original Hickey Enterprises. I have an old catalog from them, back when 1st Gen was the only gen, and a step like that with a spring is what he was selling. I figure I'll never come across one for sale, but if you think it could be duplicated, I'll try it. Thanks!
