I have been away for a while due to work. While I have been away I have been thinking and really changed direction with the blazer and added some new thoughts in the mix. First thought was to sell the blazer and use the money to fund my future project...couldn't bring my self to do that. So it will be slowly converted to a weekend warrior/hunting rig...no hard core wheeling. For my new project I'm wanting to build a custom side by side designed mainly for sand/desert but, I'd like to have some ability to run in the rocks as well. I am basing the majority of the build off a Polaris RZR. Key differences will be; motor, slightly more passenger room (so I can actually comfortably fit in it), and better suspension. This is still in the design phase and will be until about may when my house is finished being built. Current plans are either a Yamaha Apex or Kawasaki Z1 snowmobile motor as these motors use the same clutch system as a RZR and much better power/durability a long with cheaper cost then RZR 1000cc. I have to figure out how to integrate 4wd into the mix with this motor. I will stretch the passenger compartment 4-6" while trying to keep the wheel base close to the same as a RZR. The frame and cage will be all tube (sizing is TBD) trying to keep it light as possible. For suspension I'm thinking either a arms at all 4 corners or a arm front and trailing arm rear (also TBD). Will still need to come up with an idea for a fuel tank and for steering but here is a rough budget.
Tires $400
Rims $500
Engine $2000
Frame $500
Seats/harness $300
Shocks $2000
And the only inspiration I have found for the build

So what do you guys think? Any suggestions, builds, advice, etc...?
