found a 99 chevy 3500 ls version. diesel, Crew cab, long bed, single rear wheel, 4x4, 135000 miles. the owner is asking $5300

what motor tranny combo came in this and would they make a good towrig. I know some of the chevys in the 90's had a dog of a motor.

Looking for input on whether I should get or pass on it.

My 97 2500 has a 6.5 diesel and a 4l80e. Towing against my buddies dodge's i have no chance. But it does get the job done and i love mine but alot of people have their opinion

99 has electronic injection and seems to be the most powerful (by detroit diesel standards:rolleyes:) offered in a GM pickup. The transmission would either be the 4l80e or the NV4500. Both are good. Check out 62-65diesel.com for more info, lots of dedicated people over there.

The 6.5 motor can be made to keep up with a stock Duramax, but don't expect impressive 1/4 mile times. These are of the old-school diesel tech, slow and low horsepower. If you take care of it, they will last a long time, and do whatever you want. One thing I hear a lot of people complain about is overheating, so a higher volume waterpump and bigger radiator would be a good idea.

good body and tranny, run it till the motor blows, then pray to the cummins fairy for a new motor.
