Aloha all,

I intend to start a project but I haven't the necessary information till now. Maybe some of you could help me in this respect.
So, my project is: to convert a C10 2 wheels drive in a 4x4 truck with Unimog axles. From my point of view this is the ultimately car :)) That was a briefly presentation of the project.
Now, I'll present the real problem:
- C 10 automatic gear box is out of order :)
- I have another 3 automatic gear boxex with 3 or 4 speeds but I couldn't identify them. I don't know how to say this ia an LL60, that an TH 400 and the lasat TH 350. Could you help me by describing the way that I could identify them correctly?
- two of the gear boxes have transfer cases on them but, one more time I don't know to identify them at all - which modell is each one
- Unimog front axle has the differential on the left side; I've noticed that Chevy front axles differentials are on the right side of the car so that the question is how could I move the transfer case drive shaft entrances from the right side on the left side?
I hope someone could help me with some answers :)

You cant move them you have to either flop the t-case upside down, which doesn't work or get a drivers drop transfercase.

Fords have left side t-case out puts
newer chevy do also

you can tell by the shape of the transmission pan what trans it is.

I've seen a project made by a German company that install Unimog axles on a K10 and they use a t-case NP 205. I saw that this was used on early K5 models. This t-case was build also with left side out puts?

i would look for a divorced 205. how easy is it to find parts over there is the big question?

and heres a pic

heres a better pic stolen from another site

1 Aluminum Powerglide 14 bolts
2 TH200 Metric 11 bolts
3 TH350 13 bolts
4 TH400 13 bolts
5 TH200-4R 16 bolts
6 TH700-R4, 4L60, 4L60E 16 bolts
7 4L80E 17 bolts

The transfer cases should have a tag telling you what they are. Should be either an NP-203, NP-205, NP208 or an NP241

You will need to use a transfer case from a newer Chevy (one that is independent fronts supsension) to get the output on the correct side to mate to the unimog axles.

As was said you can also use a Ford Transfer case.

Which UniMog axles?
404?
Aloha,

I have two possibilities:
1) older Unimog 406 axles with brake drums, I understand that is possible to adapt disk brakes from Iveco vans and I could use 16" wheels
2) a pair of newer 406 axles with original disk brakes - I understand that only Unimog wheels could be used for them

Choosing the axles it will be the second problem, .... first I have to find the transfer case :)

You need to talk with Greg72 on here. He is doing custom 404 unimogs into a 72 blazer right now and would be your best source of info. Also IIRC the front axle pumpkin is more to the center than the left.

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely talk to him.

Does anyone know how could I test if is functionally an automatic gearbox that is not installed on a car? There are any specific tests that could be done? When I bought my cars, I received also 3 automatic gearboxes and I don't know if they are functionally or not. I don't know either if they are with 3 or 4 speed.

Hey there.
A few posts back there is a picture of all the bottoms of the transmissions so you can recognise what they are.
Once you know you can tell if they are 3 or 4 speed.
As for finding out if they are good, not easy unless they are running or if you ake them appart and at that point you might as well rebuild them.
By the way I might be going there this summer, my wife is Romanian and her sister is getting married there so I could meet with you.
They are about an hour from you in Craiova.

You could call around to find a transmission shop with a transmission dyno. This is the only way I know to test other than install it and try it.

Aloha,

I've checked yesterday the transfer case and the following info are written on its tag:
- Model 203
- Ratio 201
- Serial 53177
- Assem. No. 460834

I've tried to shift the t-case lever in different positions and only 3 are available, in the same time I've noticed that under the mechanism with the lever that you move from the interior of the car, there are another 2 levers but only one is moving, the one from the upper part, .... maybe the second from the lower part is for "Low" and could be moved only whe the car is in slow motion?

I'll be glad to meet you. I hope till than I'll find a solution and I'll finish also my project. I want to have a real 4x4 vehicle. Now, I have also a K5 Blazer from 91 but is not as capable in off-road as my last G Mercedes. So I decided to build the pick-up truck as an "ultimate 4x4 vehicle" by installing the Unimog axles :))

np203 full time 4wd t-case.

edit: my info wrong in the positions. sorry !

1 lower lever on shifter is high-n-low of range.
other lever is for 2wd (aka awd) - n - 4wd .

and those stock shifters dont like dirt and grime. thay are known to be a little problem matic. but can be cleaned up and lubed and work great.

that is also the t-case for the front range box to use for a doubbler kit.

like this http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog/doubler.htm

I am surprized and disapointed.

one lever is open / lock, the second lever is low / neutral / high.

If the 2wd comment was that the AWD is not the greatest, it's actually 1 wheel drive :)

o.k. i goofed. i only use the front half of them and make them have sex with the 205 t-cases. :haha:

Fotos of the first gerbox without transfer case

Aloha,

Tonight I had the necessary time for making photos to one of the gearboxes.
It looks like this:

It seems to me that it is a 4L60 gearbox :)

700r4 has kick down cable hole pass side second hole on case.

and electric 4l60-e or 4l80-e has huge 12-13 wire plug on side of tranny . you only have 4 pin plug.
