This is probably a dumb question and I'm most likely being over cautious.

I'm planning on pulling my rear axle/leaf springs to clean/repaint/reseal and was curious if I put the truck on jack stands, placing the stands forward of the axle, will the truck stay balanced? I figure with the weight of the engine and all the stuff up front I should be fine, but I wanted to be sure.

Should be fine as long as forward of axle means near the front rear hanger. If concerned add a few stands on the rear frame horns after rolling axle out.

Each stand would be supporting roughly 1/4 the body weight.

You will be fine.
The suburban is pretty long and will balance fine I did that even on my Jimmy

I have 2 burbs, no problems.
Ones a 3/4 ton, weighs close to 7k. You'll be fine.
