I have decided to do a frame off resto on my 72 K5. What would be a resonable price to have the frame powder coated? I have not checked into it yet and im trying to decide if i wana do that or paint the frame, or undercoat it. This will primarly be driven on the road and stored in a garage.

I cant help you one the price but have you checked around to see if someone has a booth big enough for a frame? I havent ever seen one that big.

I made a delivery a long time ago to an outfit that made lockers the kind that go in gyms and schools. they had a big assemblyline set up that porder coated the lockers and then fired them. it looked big enough to do a frame, if hung Horizontil, Now you got me thinkin...

The last time i checked into it was about 12 years ago and it was $400.00 back then.

Kinda thinking i might just clean the frame real good and paint it. maybe ill try the rust bullet stuff. anyone use it at all?

If it were me i would use a polyurethane paint. It is very durable stuff. It is probably the closest you'll get to powder coating as far as durability.

I've paid as little as $200 and as much as $1000 to do a frame, axle and suspension, core support and inner fenderwells. I've had friends pay much more when they use colors or want perfection. Most production shops should have a booth big enough. You can save some money by sandblasting the frame yourself and also by deciding if you need a perfect show finish or can get by with a couple thin spots here and there. Also some production shops might be able to group it with others getting the same color, so check with places like bumper manufacturers in your area. My old local powdercoater did the mailboxes for the USPS, so if you wanted a frame blue, it was like $100. Oh yeah, my biggest regret is not powdercoating my frame on my truck.

i check a few years ago, a local place wanted $300 with me sandblasting it. and they had an oven big enough, it was bigger than my garage.

I'd use black epoxy primer and call it done. Its tough and durable and will last a long time.

polyurethane paint who makes it? not sure that ive ever seen that type of paint. im not going for show quality but i want it to look nice. if i can get it powder coated for 300-400 thats not too bad either. i have a sand blaster i could use to do the frame. no one tried the rust bullet at all?

I would price out each process to find out which is a better deal in your area. My brother had somebody quote him a price on how much it would cost to put decent paint on his Dana 44. It was as much as the local powder-coater, so he had his housing powered coated.

If your blasting, either powdercoat it, or zinc, epoxy prime, urethane... Don't mess around with Rustbullet or POR15 in a case like that..

oh, and polyurethane is basically most car paints out today.. Imron being a super tough choice.. It's what I use..

Personally, I don't like the idea of powdercoating a frame... unworkable for future welding, drilling, etc, once it's done, you can't touch it...

To save time, look into commercial mobil sand blasting companies.

I paid $100 bucks to have my frame blasted and they were done in under an hour.

Well worth the time and trouble saved IMO.

For the 23% of the frame that you can actually see, painting seems to be the way to go for a driver...my .02

First rain storm you get caught in will cost you ubber clean up time. :doah:

Brooks powder coating is near me in west chester. I have had stuff done by them. very professional and quick. He has a booth big enough to do a frame. I have asked. :wink1: If I were going to powder coat a frame the only way I would do it is to break it copletely down. remove every rivet and coat all the peices individually. otherwise rust can stay in the joints.

slap some good paint on it. DO NOT undercoat it. water can get trapped between the undercoat and frame and rot it out.

I have a sandblaster, so ill just save the hundred bucks and buy some tractor paint and go to town. and with the money ill save ill buy a couple cases of beer and start cutting/trimming wheel wells on the 89!

We have a paint booth, sandblast booth and a powder coating booth at work big enough to do an semi tractor AND a 53 foot fully enclosed trailer.

I used Rust Bullet on my truck frame a year & a 1/2 ago when I replaced the bed. I wire wheeled the rust on it. I'm pleased with it's durability but it's hard to get the stuff every where with a brush or roller.
