Ok guys I took my blazer out for a spin yesterday. It drove fine the first 5 miles then all of a sudden I felt a loss of power as if it wanted to stall followed by a backfire. I check my fuel pressure gauge and it reads from 5-7psi so I kno it's getting fuel. It'll start up fine but shuts off when it backfires seconds after I start it...I pulled it home and didn't get a chance to diagnose it (too loud for the neighbor and didn't want to piss her off). So I'm planning on it today. Any suggestions on where to start? Where should my timing be set at? It's a forged bottom end 454, 049' ported heads, 770 holley vac secondaries and a gear drive insteAd of a timing chain. Thanks guys...

Timing chain jumped time sounds like.
Will need new chain and sprockets.

Head Gasket! if blown between cyclinders the oil and coolant might not always see it mixed and give you timing chain symptoms, pinging, backfire, no power under load but would idle somewhat smooth. Had this happen to me. Removed and replaced timing chain only to discover that wasn't it. Do a compression test before anything else .

It has a gear drive so I'm eliminating the timing chain issue. I will perform a compression test followed by checking timing. Hech I'll do a pressure test first to c if there's an internal leak or so, thanks guys I'll keep ya'll posted

Thats what I get for posting while someone is talking to me at work. Completely missed the gear drive part.

Still sounds like a timing problem, but since gears aren't exactly prone to do that......
When you say backfire, I assume you mean back through the carb.

If so, then it sounds like crossfire. You need to closely check the dist. cap and rotor, and make sure the plug wires have not come loose from their holder.

If, however, you mean through the exhaust, then it sounds like the ignition is cutting off briefly and then firing, in which case you need to check the same thing, but also suspect the ignition module.

BTW, I once, and only once, saw a gear drive jump time without massive amounts of wear or abuse.

I had just helped bolt everything up, got it fired off and set the timing. He blipped the throttle about 3 times, and it started backfiring and running like.....well, you know.

First, we thought the dist. had spun, but it was tight.

Checked the obvious, then the not so obvious. Finally realized the timing was way off. More than it should have be able to do.

Looked like a timing chain, sounded like a timing chain, heck it almost smelled like a timing chain.

Only one thing to do.

All the while we were pulling the timing cover, we kept telling ourselves that it could not be, we were just doing that to eliminate that possibility once and for all.

Brand new Woodruff key had sheered off and the gear had turned on the shaft.

Some days you just can't win.........

Are any plug wires melted to the manifold/header?

Start with the simple stuff like cap/rotor/module/wires before buying any parts or jumping to conclusions of major problems.

Check the float bowl for debris in the needle and seat, but you can check first to make sure fuel is not pouring into the engine through the boosters while it's trying to run.
