Hey all,

I have a bone stock 71 K5 with a 350 4bbl and manual everything (4 speed, steering, brakes). I'm planning on buying a power steering conversion kit (from Brothers) and will also be replacing the tie rod ends. Pretty much all of the front-end suspension and steering parts are original except for the shocks and steering damper.

Is there any other work some of you more experienced guys would recommend I do while in the course of this install? Are there any potential pitfalls I should look out for? I want to correct any potential problems while I have stuff apart.

Also, I need to replace the shocks all around. The truck is mainly used for long-distance highway travel (often towing a popup) followed by short off-road excursions - nothing really hairy. Any recommendations for shocks would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Inspect your drag link ends for wear while you have everything apart. Not sure what the kit that you are buying comes with but you probably want to replace your rag joint if it is old.

A quality set of shocks will be a nice addition and I will let others give recommendations regarding that.

Got any pics of your K5?

Oh, BTW, welcome to CK5!

When you drop the manual box off the frame, do yourself a favor and install a steering box brace. Most of use w/ ps have had some issues of cracking or other damage to this area and now is a great time to prevent or fix it!

Thanks for the replies! The box brace is a great idea - I've heard that is a problem spot.

I'll post some pictures soon (hopefully). I don't have any in digital form at the moment, and the truck is currently buried in boxes and other stuff.
