First I guess I'll introduce myself. Name is Chad and I live near Colorado Springs. I bought an 85 K5 two months ago and found coloradok5 shortly thereafter. Great source of information and hopefully some folks to wheel with.

Back to the fun stuff....my power steering gear box began leak from under the lash adjustment bolt. Attempts at tightening the bolt found the lash adjustment bolt freely spins left or right, never loosening or tightening.

The lash adjustment bolt is in the center of a cover that has 4 bolts on the corner. I'd like to take off that cover and see if I can repair the leak without replacing the entire gear box, but I can't find an exploded diagram of the gear box to see what's under the cover.

I'm assuming the gear box will need to be replaced, but I would like to find a 'weekend fix' for the upcoming holdiay weekend if anyone has anything in mind. I've never seen a ps gear box leak like this before...

Happy Memorial day to all the vets out there.

Hmm, I don't have the privs to view the picture. Guess I need to fork over my $25 first. I'll have to do that from the home computer later.

A seal kit and helicoil or new top cover may be in order.

With the pitman arm off, the sector gear and top cover should come out together once you have those four bolts out. Most likely you will need a new top cover if it is leaking at the adjuster threads. You could try thread sealer, but your cover may be cracked. While you have it apart you can do a complete rebuild of the box. The kit is $35 at Advanced Auto. Excellent write up here.
