I need to either rebuild or buy a remanufactured gear box. I went to Pep Boys and they have a reman one for $140 bucks or get it rebuilt for $220.

Has anyone had any experience w/ Pep Boys reman boxes or can you recommend a place to get a 2wd gear box????

Thanks in advance.

I got mine at autozone, I think there is really only 2 companies that reman them, atsco and cardone, both are good.

Rebuild it yourself. They aren't hard to do and the kit is cheap. After tearing into one i'll never buy another steering box ever.

Well maybe not ever, I took mine apart to rebuild it shortly after I got the truck, and it must have been run low on fluid alot, because the inside of the case was trashed and gouged at the input from the steering shaft, I had to put it back together and turned it in as a core.

That's when you hit the wrecking yard for a rebuildable box.

I agree with rebuilding, it was not that hard and pretty straight forewards. There is instruction on the "other" web sites on how to do it. i will send you am IM.

man, this makes me feel so lucky to have parts piled up,...if i had 3-4 good hot rodders/wheelers w/ all my crap we could all be wheeling in a couple-3 weeks...i hate working alone, not that i don't get anything done, its the comradereiry (sp?)

i got mine from autozone after having no luck with trying to rebuild mine on my own. no leaks since... i would do that if it is in your budget.

I'm currently in the process of rebuilding mine with a full rebuild kit from West Texas Off-Road. Anyone have any tips on getting the worm shaft ball bearings back into the steering piston? I've tried packing the helix with grease and threading the worm shaft back in but it keeps pushing a few of the balls out of the track.

The shop manual says to put the worm shaft in the piston and drop the balls in the lower hole while turning the shaft counterclockwise, but i don't see how that could be done with everything installed in the box.

Any tips?
