My power steering went out today and I need some help with it. I did what any rational person would do and checked the fluid level and it's fine. There are no noticable leaks. The belt to the steering pump is tight. So my question is, how can I tell if it's the pump or the steering box? I know it's kind of a noob question, but I really don't have the money to replace both right now. So I need to replace the right one or I'm sitting my blazer in the garage for the next week or so. If it is the box, now is probably the best time to install crossover steering.

Can you turn the wheels still? If so, I don't see how it could be the box.
pump test is easy .
engine off check level and note it.
fire engine and see if level drops and if fluid is swirling in tank.
if no change or swirling of fluid time for pump.
you can swap just pump. will need to get pulley puller/installer to swap it off the bracket thats bolted to the engine.
when new pump on fill to full. turn wheels slow left to right with front tires off ground . recheck and add fluid and cycle wheels till level stays the same. THEN FIRE THE ENGINE for 5-7 sec and turn off. recheck level and add if needed. then fire up again and let run and fill as needed. cycle wheels left to right again . then time for road test.
this is the best way to get min amount of air in new system. and new pumps can humm a little bit till broken in.

Update: I backed it into the carport and I had to crank the wheel all the way to the right. Those 35" tires are a SOB to turn without power steering. I checked the level cold then fired it up and moved it. After I shut it down and there was fuid flowing out of the top of the pump, where you fill it. The level definitley changed. The cap was on as well. So.... I am not sure what to think. I am not all that farmiliar with steering systems. Although something tells me am about to be.
if pump dont work or motor is off . a p/s pump system will over fill its self and toss fluid out past the cap . ford is the most sensitive of this problem . gm does it also but just takes a little longer to puke.
