Hi all, i'm trying to find out the minimum amount of flow that a power steering pump needs to put out to maintain power assist at low idle. i'm using a mid 80's 2wd 1 ton steering box with ORD crossover on a Dana 60 and i know that the stock pump was a 1350-1450 psi 3.1 - 3.5 gpm flow but i'm pretty sure at idle the output falls below flow control level, maybe just below 3 gpm. i'm trying to find this out as i'm having a pump set up to spec for my 91 suburban which i've fitted the cummins 5.9 diesel, i don't want to go with the dodge ram vacuum + steering pump combo. has anyone tried a car pump (2.6-2.8 gpm flow) hooked up to a truck steering gear? any help, advice, comments very welcome. cheers.
