The pump on my truck has been making noise for a little while now. I got a trail ride in july so I would like to swap it out before then. Now do I just get a new stock pump or one of those aftermarket high flow pumps? My brother has the AGR super pump on his truck and he can turn 46s pretty easily (with out hydro assist). But his pump is several years old before AGR started going down the $hitter. I currently don't have hydro assist but its something I want to do in the future. What do ya think?

If hydro assist is even a sliver of a possibility for your future then get a better one. Check out PSC at http://www.offroadsteering.com .

I have a PSC remote ressy, and I'm gonna run their SP-1200X pump with it....

You are running the (SP-1405K) '80-'06 Hi-Performance P-Series Pump / Reservoir Kit ?

That is what it turned into. I had their series with the high performance pump but the stock style surrounding reservoir but I wanted to go remote. So, I pulled the pump from the reservoir and ordered up the rest of the parts which make up the kit. I replaced the reservoir with the can but went with the 8" remote reservoir though. At the same time, I swapped my V-belt system to the serpentine system so I ordered the serpentine pulley for the pump.

IMO, aftermarket pumps are WAY overrated.

I'm running a stock pump (UNmodified), crossover steering with a 1.5" hydro assist ram.

Tons of steering power with minimal effort, I have a detroit in the front running 42's.

Here's a video from a couple years ago, the buggy was hung up on the belly and the steering had enough power to actually push the whole truck over before it could turn the tires:

Yes, but keep in mind that is in a buggy which weighs considerably less than a full size rig loaded down with a ton of camping gear too.

I am with Chris on this one. I would bet you could do hydro assist on what the new aftermarket pump would cost you. It will take more work but be totally worth it.

More important than a pump is a cooler

True, but IMO the stock pump is very good. You can get a remanufactured pump for $50 or so and have a lifetime warranty from stores that are basically everywhere.

Do the aftermarket pumps flow more and make more pressure? Of course they do. But they cost much more and have little or no warranty. I've seen lots of people struggle with aftermarket pumps.

And hence why I feel aftermarket pumps are overrated and not worth the $$.

Agreed, a power steering cooler is VERY important if you are going to wheel the truck.

I've seen a bunch of people lose power steering (or have the fluid boil over) while wheeling, its a huge PITA to deal with and its obviously hard on steering components.

Transmission coolers work great for this purpose; they're cheap and often have 3/8" tubes (which is the same size as the low pressure power steering hose on K series trucks) so they are very easy to implement.

i got a stock pump you can have if you want it.
Thanks for the offer but I think I'm going to run to NAPA tomarrow and get a pump, that way I will have the warrenty. I have a small transmission cooler from a dodge caravan that I think I will use

You can apply that argument to pretty much every part. Most stock parts are pretty good, but an aftermarket part can be much better, and of course you pay much more for it. The question then remains, what is the purpose of your rig, how much are you willing to spend, and do you have it to spend it? For someone financially solid, perhaps a few more bucks is worth having a better product. For somebody on a budget, maybe that little extra performance isn't worth the cost. I also think it depends on the company. I've been impressed with PSC and they have taken good care of me. They also just modify existing factory pumps many times to increase performance instead of trying to re-invent the wheel. I've heard nightmare stories about AGR and in that case, I would agree that the money might not be worth the headaches.
