Hi guys just a quick question for ya. I have a recently aquired 88 GMC Jimmy. On start up im getting a loud squeak and when i put it in gear right away the squeak goes away most of the time. However sometimes it turns into a pulley sound for a few seconds then goes away. Pretty sure its the power steering pump.

Now im getting a weird thing when im turning. It turns then acts as if im all the way turned and squeaks. I then turn the other way quick and then it lets me go all the way the first direction.

This happened to anyone else???! My days off are comin up and im going to start lookin at it but figured id ask if anyone else has seen it!

Sounds like a loose and/or glazed power steering belt.
If the belt slips, you lose power steering which feels like its reached the end of its travel.
There are two possible sounds you may be hearing. The squeal is a belt, the humming hiss is the pressure bypass on the power steering pump.

If the belt is good, something might be binding in the steering, but most likely its the belt.

It could be what Fordum said or the power steering pump could be going bad and not pumping enough fluid. Power steering box could be going bad and not letting the fluid move as good as well. With it running you can look down in the pump if you Pull the cap and see if the fluid is circulating good Or not. Also if you haven't check the fluid level. It will squeak when it is low too.

thanks for the tips guys! ill replace the belt and check to see if the fluid is circulating. It definitely has enough fluid in it. I wish the problem was just low fluid but the problem never seems to be that easy :haha:
