Has anyone converted a power tailgate window to manual? If so what all is involved, parts wise and installation wise?
Or is there someone out there that wants to swap me?
Its a 90 white Jimmy. Has no rust.

I throw in some of my inexperienced advice

. It shouldnt be too hard to do. First off you'll need a manual window regulator, ya know that big doo-dad with the gears. Im looking at the prices LMC has and a new one is $130, part # 35-6888. Then you'll need a the manual handle assembly, part #38-6678 for $50. You don't have to buy new parts but I just told you the numbers to give you an idea if you have the catalog. Then you get your parts, open up the access cover and have at it. Take out the regulator (transmission is attached to this), cable, motor, cut out switch, and handle assembly. Then you just put in the manual regulator and manual handle and you should be done. The wires will be left for you to keep to add toys to or just remove them if you want. You might be able to hook up some KC's to the back to blind tailgaters or some air horns. You'll lose the conveince but it will be more dependable in the rougher enviroments. Good Luck

Yeah, I got the LMC cat. And thats what I was thinking, But I was thinking, my friend has a 78 burb with manual window, I was wondering if his hardware would fit or mount properly so i dont have to purchase the stuff from LMC. Anybody got any idy's on this?

I don't see a reason why it wouldnt fit. It would have been cheaper for GM to make one tailgate instead of two. Look it over, the outside metal should be indentical. Only one way to find out

Why are you wanting to go to a manual system? I regreased the motor in mine the other day and it works twice as good. It goes up/down really strong now, even though the weather stripping is shot.

In my opnion its not the internal componets but the wiring. It seems on about every truck I've seen there's always splices done to it. The manual doesn't care how cold it is or how good your battery is, as long as its greased it'll roll.

I guess its a security thing. Like having a TH400 instead of a 700R4. I'll always know that I can get it up or down no matter where or what the weather is like.

The poor old 700R4 sure takes alot of crap. I like 'em, the first two gears are lower than that of the 350 or 400 and it has the OD gear. People use 'em to go wheelin and they have problems, of course they do. Its not designed for that, the 400 is meant for the big stuff, don't blame the 700R4. I like my 700, its still going where as the 350 in our '81 isn't.

Ok, well I didn't mean to open that can of worms. But I talked to 2 different people last night, they have the manual gears and all the extras and said they will fit. So that what Im gonna do.

I just replaced my power rear window in my 87 Jimmy to manual this past summer so it is fresh in my memory. You need a regulator, the handle which has the lock cylinder, a paul, spring, clutch, and a little e clip(all these things fit in the handle). The whole thing took me about 3 hours start to finish, but I was taking my time and cleaning stuff up as I go. My electric one wouldn't work when cold and was very slow when warm so I like knowing that my window will definitly work no matter what. All in all it will set you back about 250 bucks. To me it is totally worth it!! TO make it easy, take the glass out first to get it out of the way. then the rest is smooth sailing.
 
For those of you getting rid of the power stuff:

Would you be interested in selling the key switch (the one in the tailgate)? Mine just burned out and I need one.

I took the tailgate apart, heres what I found. The plastic/teflon rollers that the window mount rides on are worn and the felt is worn in the guides. And it was letting the window mount lip catch on the motor as it passed under is. So I got out the grinder and smoothed the lip out a bit and greased it, now it goes without hitting and with re-greasing all the tracks it seems to be alittle smoother now. The cable seems to be in good shape. So I'll leave it the way it is for now.

just a short side note about the suburban/blazer tailgate.....the gates are different....the suburban gate slopes inward to the body and has two raised portions that slope up on the ends. the regulater should be the same, but I would check closely before buying...also the linkage (if any) may be different between the regulater and the handle because of the slope....I have a funny feeling the glass itself may be the same...but don't quote me on this....just my 2 cents....ED
