I am looking to do power windows in my first gen, but I suppose my theory works for all gens.

I am wondering if I can just take the crank portion off of my window regulators and drive the big gear section with a power window motor??
Cutting and welding is no concern, so mounting shouldnt be a problem. I am wondering if any of you know of any models that the teeth would line up (correct pitch and mesh).

Also, is the wiring of a motor as easy as it seems? I have a painless harness already that comes with a circuit for power windows. Is there just a switch that reverses polarity on the motor? Are there any kind of stop switches, or does the motor just stall at the ends of the travel?

I know there are kits out there, but I'm sure that some of you will understand wheeling on a budget

For the wiring, you might want to check out any of the threads here concerning adding relays to speed up window motors.
Basically the wiring and switches were marginal when new, and time takes its toll. The mod consists of adding relays with heavy power leads in the circuit to make sure the motors get full voltage.

No only does it get you ahead of the curve if you install the mod when you change over to motors, but there are some very good schematics in those threads.

As for doing the actual conversion, I'm sure there are folks here who have already done it.
I would personally suspect a trip to a junkyard would be a good start.

J.C. Whitney used to sell power window conversion kits that simply went over the splined shaft the manual crank used to go on,and the motor was contained in a small box...kind of crude and ugly, but it worked...

Personally I'd rather have manual windows, power windows are a pain in the butt--dont work half the time in winter when its cold or they fail when the window is all the way down,etc...just another thing to give trouble,IMO---my 85 Burb has PW and PDL and I wish it didn't...
