The motor goes up and down with normal speed, but when it goes to far down, it stops moving and the motor makes a popping sound. Do I just need to clean the old grease of the regulator or should I replace the motor? The previous owner had the new motor when I bought it. Is it possible to clean it without removing the regulator/motor?

Here is where my lack of specific knowledge about K5s bites me in the butt again. That may be common and I just never ran into it.

But, if I had to make a guess, it sounds like the gears are slipping past when the window bottoms out.
In my trucks, the motor just stalls. But if your motor or the regulator was slightly loose, they might be able to move apart enough under a stain to let the gear teeth jump past each other.

Pulling the panel off so you can see the gear train should tell you what is happening.
Look for a loose mounting piece.

Worn out is probably it. Mine are original and I'm amazed they still work. Well, the rear window catches sometimes and needs a little help periodically...

Mine did this for a while then stopped moving more than a few inches. You need a new motor. Clean and re-lube everything when you replace it.

I just did it and besides needed a second set of hands to get the window back in the motor track its pretty easy.

67-72 trucks has a couple pics on the topic if you search but that's about it. Hardest part is getting the assy in and out. You just have to get the angle of the dangle right.
