Pre planning

If you know the exact rig you want (i want a 1985 K5 blazer or a K30)

is it smart to start collecting parts and aftermarket goodies you plan to use before you get the vehicle?

Especially if you thats what you want (and the 80;s trucks share the same parts)?

Tough call. I want to build a rat rod and found the perfect steering setup in the U Pull it along with the seats I want. I didnt get them because my plans are put on hold, if I were to get the parts I may sit on them forever and eventually toss them or sell them. Im a minimalist so I dont like keeping things around that im not using right now.

IF you can find parts cheap/free and have the space to store them, go for it.

I know if i had the space, I couldve had a couple rolling K5s to pick parts from.

I wouldn't collect anything unless it was a screaming deal. You might find one with the things you already collected. You could just save that money for the truck you want

well I mean if I plan on getting a K5 and wanted to acquire a Dana 60 or a 14bolt.. not likely to find a blazer with that stuff already in it around here.

Doesnt really matter what year, or in some cases even brand, axles(gears,lockers,steering)/tires/wheels/some cases doubler, etc can pretty much be stuck in any rig.

Sometimes stocking things you think you may need now may not be true when you get the rig. But it gives you trade material or sales material to get what you need later. Just keep the parts generic enough to fill multiple needs.

Thats what i plan on.. all in the same year and vehicle family unless its a cummins and rockwells but I dont need those

basically Dana 60

14BFF

Sot top (for a blazer)

Bigger rubber

and front/ rear Bumers

and a radio

(minus all the body work and or repair needed)

But i suppose If i get K30 i wont need the axles... But im gunna be very specific.. I dont want a looong boat of a truck.. Mainly looking for the shortest OVER 10,000 pound GVW truck so i can go as i high as i want and still pass inspection

I dont ever plan anything with my trucks. As soon as I come up with one I change my mind.:dunno:

I do however, buy any and all parts that are good deals when I can afford them. Its a safe bet that as long as there is fuel to put in the tank I will own a chevy k truck and it is also a safe bet that it will need parts at some point. And if I dont end up needing the parts I can usually find someone that does and help them out with a good deal so they can keep their truck on the road.:thumb:

Nooooo....

Aside from high steer/x-over.... NO.
Your plans will ALWAYS change....

I would like to keep everything street legal. Thats why ive tossed up between a Blazer and a k30 (completely different worlds i know)

I know if I get a k30 itll already have a 60/14 combo and a 205 transfercase... which is why im considering it .

Is there a K30 that has a standard cab with a shorter bed that is over 10,000 pounds GVW?

All of the k30s were long beds. To get a shorter bed you'll have to build it.

a long bed is ok by me, i just dont feel like having a cab the size of a cab thats 20 ft long lol

are they 10k pounds or higher gvw?
