I have a crate motor that has been sitting since it was new in 2005. I plan on pulling the heads & oil pan to make sure nothing has fallen into it over the years.

Will I need new valve springs...? It has never seen fuel yet...(long ugly divorce & $$$ recovery). I ask only because I will have it apart soon.

As always, thanks in advance. :waytogo:

It has been kept inside all this time? Yes? Wrapped up and kept dry? If so, I'd simply pull the plugs, squirt some WD40 in and put the plugs back in, prime the oil pump with the drill method through the distributor drive, turn the engine over a few revs by hand, and fire it up. Once it is up and running for a couple of minutes, I would then change the oil after the first start up.

If the rockers are on the engine which means some valves have been in the open position for 10 years I would absolutely replace all the valve springs because the ones that have been sitting compressed for 10 years will break in quick order. There's also a good chance that the rings have seized in the ring lands and the engine will smoke, some people have been succesful at freeing them up and others not so much.
