Im looking for what you guys would do in this situation.
I have a fresh 2,300 mile 383 4 bolt, built by an unknown builder. Very mild and very stock. I am certain the mileage is 100% accurate.
I drove the truck 80 mile home and with fresh gas it didnt miss a beat. Quiet, no knocks, pings, grinding, taps or anything wierd. However i noticed the 2"Autometer oil gauge was pretty low on pressure 10lbs at idle.
I know i should have checked it with a known gauge but...... The PO gauge install was kinda shady too,, it was an electric guage with the sending unit connected with a piece of 18" length of Grease gun hose And he rigged the sending unit strapped to the firewall so im sure the ground was bad.
So naturally In my Impatiient manner i yanked the motor out to put in my blazer, now im wondering while the motor is on the stand should i change the oil pump to a high volume high pressure pump, (its currently a M55a Per build sheet) and check some clearances, or not trust the gauge and run it.
Thoughts?

It won't get any easier than right now. You could "prime" the motor, with a drill primer; check it with a mechanical guage plugged into the back of the motor. It should give you at least 20# doing it this way.

what was the condition of the oil in? What viscosity was it? I'd say while its out and on a stand, pull all the main bearing caps and rod caps and plastigauge them. That will be the only true way of telling why you might have low pressure.
