Gents,

I'm getting close to the point of saying "screw it" and just buying the TIG machine that I've wanted for a long time....

Miller Dynasty 200DX - #951139

That's the TIG machine package with the cart and the water cooled torch.:bow::bow:

It's a LOT of machine, and gets amazing reviews everywhere I look. Obviously, it's complete overkill for someone who has never TIG welded before, but it's also likely to be the LAST machine I'd ever need to buy since I'd never outgrow it.... knowing that it's my "forever" machine I'm willing to make the financial stretch.

I've never regretted buying quality tools. :waytogo:

Looking at the usual places like CyberWeld.com or WelderSupply.com it looks like the package price is right around $5000.... but before I go ahead and pull the trigger I wanted to ask the group if there are any other promotions or legitimate sources that might allow me to get this unit even cheaper?

I'd read that Miller sometimes offers insane discounts to student at technical schools, etc. so I figured it would be worth asking if anyone knows of a more cost-effective way to get into this machine rather than just placing an order with one of the big internet welding supply houses??? :dunno:

The last thing I want to do is buy it, and then have someone here say:

"Oh dude, you should have said something, I'm a Miller rep and could have totally hooked you up..."

or

"If you had waited 2 weeks, there is going to be a huge sale going on"

:D

Thanks All.

Can't say anything about finding prices, but that is an excellent machine. If you were not looking at a liquid cooled torch, I would push you in that direction. I had to add one to my Lincoln 200 unit. Short welds with argon cooled is OK, but I could not run a 3 inch bead without letting the torch cool before the next bead.

That's kind of what I figured about the torch.... I have a feeling that once I get the hang of this new machine I'm going to be using it A LOT, and I'm not going to want to wait for it to cool down between passes. Comfort seems to be key with TIG welding also. If you are juggling a hot torch and trying to complete a weld without burning yourself, it's going to be impossible to do a nice job.

Might As Well.... spend the money on the torch upgrade and have the right stuff from the beginning. :D

I have had the same machine for 8 years, it was worth every penny. Its a very good welder and water cooled is the only way to go with Tig. I bought mine when I was taking a night class for welding at my local VoTech. Saved almost a grand!

It takes a lot of practice to get good, but once you get the hang of it you'll want to use it every time you need to weld. Biggest down fall of Tig is it's slow, but not throwing sparks everywhere is a huge plus. When Tig the metal has to be Very clean. Otherwise you'll be fighting porosity big time.

Perhaps you've not seen my 6-year build thread? :haha:

Slow isn't a problem for me....

OH I've seen your thread, so I know you got time to burn. Just letting people know that it's a slower process.
