Problem Fixed, just had to turn up the air pressure and a change of oil

I've been trying for the last couple days to get these crazy bolts out. I have all but 5 of the axle shaft bolts out (the 5 remaining are on the same side). I'm trying to pull the axle shaft out to change my gears to 5.13's.

Here's what I have tried...

-air impact and hammered on them
-punch and hammer to the center of the bolt
-breakover bar and a 4foot extension
-air hammer again
-BFH and another punch
-Air hammer

I'm about ready to fir up the torch, would this help and will it mess up any of the bearings on the hub? I just want to heat the hub up a little and try to use the air hammer to bust the bolts loose. /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

I see that you've tried it already but a Good impact should knock em right out no problem. I would keep trying everything else and do the heat as a last ditch effort.
Try some penetrating oil tonight and hit them again in the morning.

I don't know what you're doing with the air hammer but stop it, whatever it is.

I'd get out the torch and heat the bolts up, then let them cool off. This will break them loose from the hub.

Then get the impact with the correct 6 point socket and zip them right out.

You're not going to damage the bearings in the hub, they'll be fine.

yeah I only use 6point sockets with the impact, and have a bluepoint snapon impact and 6point sockets. I'll give them a shot of PB Blaster tonight and hammer on them a minute tomorrow morning, then the torch is coming out /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

try turning the airpressure up as far as the compressor will allow, 120+
if that fails borrow a high end of the line IR gun or get a 3/4" impact
get an extractor ready though cause if they are that stubborn you are probably gonna end up breaking the heads off

OH I forgot to add, when I was letting the impact hammer on them I ran it in reverse for a few seconds the forward for a couple second and then in reverse again. Thats how I got all the rest of the bolts out. These are just being a pain! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I usually run this impact about 65-70PSI because thats what alot of the other tools run at. I do have the dial on the impact all the way up. I'll try bumping up the pressure a bit tomorrow also. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

the pressure will help alot, i run all my tools at full presure.

I run most of my tools wide open and regulate down only when the tool won't stand for it. Most tools work fine at 120+ psi. I also use pressure to slow down my air drill or die grinder if need be, and of course for painting, but that's about it.

Most hi end guns are wasted (not at full usage) below 80psi. We keep all of the lines at 90psi in my shop and it runs our guns great. We did shatter two guns one day on an unregulated line however (175psi). I guess the heat thing is the next best idea. Being in AZ I don't have a lot of knowledge on rusted/stuck bolts. Heck I swear this city melts lock-tight right out half of the time.

Oops, should have said mines single stage so I never go much over 120. On a higher pressure system, yeah, gotta drop it some before breaking stuff.

I run about 100 psi, I also use 2 different impacts, one(snapon) for light everyday work, and the ingersoll rand, at 100 psi it reverses at 800 ft-lbs, if it won't turn out from that, it usually breaks it off, just the way I like it. use a torch, just heat the bolt, let it cool, then repeat a couple times, (heat till cherry red, then let cool) then try turning it out. /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif

Filled up the impact (which I found out after I took off the plastic cover is a chicago pneumatic impact) rotated it by hand a few times in each direction, then I drained it and refilled it with fresh marvel air tool oil. Cranked the air up to about 100PSI and hammered a couple times on the bolt and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ popped right out /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

the snap on impact are not the greatest
for the money you could have picked up a top of the line IR, like my IR244 (or is it 241)
they are pimping their plastic fantastic versions as better then mine but they lowered the advertised specs on the metal ones to sell the cheaper to produce plastics

no impact is gonna put out below 80psi, at 120psi the IR's are like an explosive device

/forums/images/graemlins/deal.gifWell this impact is probley older than I am, its my pops from when he worked at John Deere and they had to buy their own tools, he left john deere 22 years ago and went to Caterpillar and brought all his tools home from Deere. I bet he bought this impact around 1974-75, which would make it 3years older than me and still works great /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

YEP!
The oil I drained out was probley 10 years old since we dont use it much, pretty gunky too. Since we bought a couple bottles of air tool oil I might drain all the tools and refill them.
