stock 87 tbi motor. I no longer have the rod that goes up through the air cleaner. Looking down into where this screws in it appears the last owner had it break on him and he jb welded it in. Problem is I am leaving to go to a local comp tommorow night. Other than swapping a whole nother tbi unit in is there any thing I can do to get it fixed.

Help a guy out, I am super tired tonight so hopefully something will come to me tommorow. Thanks guys

If you just need to to hold the air cleaner on short term, get some bungee cords. Deal with the JB weld later.

Otherwise get the dremel out and start removing JB weld.

I wish I had known, I threw away an old TBI body when I moved.:doah: The new Safari is SFI so I didn't think I would have any use for it.

As resurected jimmy said, try removing the JB with a dremel to get it to a point you can drill and tap for the hold down bolt. Other than that, I think you are pretty much stuck with picking up another body to use.

well I think that I will end up swapping it out. Don't have the time to do anything else, I don't have the time to do that. Off the computer now and to work for me thanks guys

Doesn't seem like time was on your side here, but there are other options than replacing tbi units (although I probably would). Some TBI cars ran an air cleaner that was BOLTED down instead of the little rod through the center. Two of the bolts that hold down the TBI were studs about 4 inches long. The air ceaner had two holes and two wingnuts...

If I were in a similar situation, I would probably cut 2 pieces of all-thread long enough to come through the lid, thread them into intake, thread on a couple nuts to hold down TBI, drill aircleaner lid and grab a couple wingnuts. To hell with the lid - cheap and everywhere. You could grab a new lid and fix or replace the T.B. later as time allowed.

Just thought I would update a bit and tell you how I solved my problem.

I had another TBI at my shop I went and got it. Then decided to chip away the JB weld just to see if I could get the remaining part of the stud out. The jb weld came right off. The stud was pretty loose in there, tried to get pliers on it vice grips, couple other things, nothing worked. Well apparently the fleshy part of your finger if jammed down hard enough is pretty useful in this situation. I jammed my finger down on the stud and started turning my finger. Took about a minute and kind of hurt but it was quicker than taking the TBI unit off. new stud in and I am off to the races. :D
