I installed a new alum. intake, headers and the holley truck avenger. Now my truck won't start. It is back firing through the carb. I figure it is something with my timing . I started at top dead center at the #1 piston and saw which wire it was pointing to and ran my wires frome there. 1863......

It is still doing it. Is it possible I have the distributor cocked a little. Where should my #1 wire on the distributor be pointing 6:00 or 5:30. Should I lift the distrib. out completely and reinstall it at 6:00. Please help winter is coming fast.

Did you mess with the dist. at all when doing these mods? If not it might have something to do with the carb, possibly it is messed up out of the box.

No , the firing order is matter of factly 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

I'm also betting the distributor. I had the same problem did all the same upgrades he did, except I couldn't get the distributor back in the right spot, when I finally hit the sweet spot she started up but then I ran into more problems but that's a whole other story.

EAT BEEF

I have my firing order right I was trying to remember off the top of my head. The firing order was stamped on the original intake. I was asking if anyone knew give or take where the distributors #1 wire should be pointing. 5 oclock, 6, 5:30. This might help me figuring out what kind of change I have to make to the dist.

It shouldnt matter exactly where the #1 wire is, as long as the rotor is pointed at the #1 spark plug wire it will be fine. Have you set your timing? Is it still backfiring?

I second the 180* theory. Flip your dist. around. Even if that's not it, it only takes a few to eliminate the possibility.

I flipped it around, no dice. I hate being broke down. Sometimes flames will shoot out of the carb. My firing order is good. Any other suggestions, PLEASE!!!!

Do you have spark? All your wires secure? If its backfiring through the carb you are either 180ºs off or your 5&7 spark plugs are flipped the wrong way.

From GM Service Manual:
Installation-Engine Disturbed:
1. Locate No. 1 piston in firing position by either of the two methods described below:
a. Remove No. 1 spark plug and with finger on plug hole crank engine until compression is felt in the no. 1 cylinder. Continue cranking until timing mark on crankshaft pulley lines up with timing tab attached to engine front cover.
b. remove rocker cover, (left bank on v-8) and crank engine until no.1 intake valve closes and continue to crank slowly about 1/3 turn until timing mark on pully lines up with timing tab.

2. Postion the dsitributor to opening in block in normal installed attitude, noting postion of vacuum control unit.

3. Postion rotor to point toward front of engine (with distrbutor housing held in installed attitude) then turn rotor counter clockwise approzimatly 1/8 turn more toward left cylinder bank and push distributor down to engine camshaft. It may be nessesary to rotate rotor slightly until camshaft engagment is felt.

4. While pressing firmly down on distributor housing, kick starter over a few times to make sure oil pump shaft is engaged. Install hold-down clamp and bolt and snug up.

5. Crank engine by hand to put no.1 piston back in firing position according to step 1. Place distributor cap in position and check to see that rotor lines up with terminal for no. 1 spark plug.

6. Install cap, check all wire connections.

7. Connect vaccuum line to distributor.

8. Start engine and set timing as described in tune-up section 6.

make sure you wires are going in the right order clockwise 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2
also 1 is the drivers front, then 3 5 7 on drivers side 2 4 6 8 on pass side.

If you wires are in order, try jumpin all the wires 2 posts clock wise on the dizzy and see if it starts, if its firing through the carb its too advance, throught the pipes its to retatred
