Hey guys I need to get some ideas on what is up with the brakes on my truck.

first off I have a 1987 k(v)10 that i just lifted and put 3/4 ton axles under, I am not getting the braking power i think I should get. I can lock the front end up without the rear wheels locking. when I jack the truck up, the tire will freespin 360 deg before stoping (forward movement). get about 90 deg in the opposite direction.

I was wonding if i may have the shoes installed backward ? since one pad is thicker than the other. or is the proportioning valve causing me greif from changing axles?

I need to get my truck back to safe operation so let me know what you think.

I do not follow what you are suggesting....do they sound like they could be loose or tight?

I am asking if you have adjusted the rear drums. there is an adjustment wheel inside the drums that need to be properly adjusted or the brakes won't work as well as designed.

i have adjusted them, but I am not going to rule out that as an issue. I wanted to know if it sounded like the shoes are adjusted too tight or loose. due to the difference in how my wheels spin.

The proportioning valve may give you problems if you tried to apply brake pressure when there was an overwhelming pressure difference from front to rear (i.e. brake line blowout, pushing the pedal before gravity bleeding the rear brakes). They can stick and do some weird stuff

The shoes should be installed w/ the small shoe (least pad material) towards the front of the vehicle. To adjust, spin the wheel while turning the adjuster and once slight drag is felt its good.:wink1:

i did the least material to the front, so i am good there, May have some more adjusting to do or backing off. I am goning to pull the drums tonight to see what everything looks like.

I figured I would notice a big difference in how the truck stopped with the larger brakes on it than i did with the stock set up.

your small brake master cylander may not have enough pressure to push the brakes hard enough to push out the wheel cylanders with the new axles.just a thought.as said before check the brake adjustment also.if thewy arent adjusted out far enough the brake cylanders are not going to push out hard enough on the drum to cause a good braking effect.also did you bleed the brakes good.thats also a common problem.start at the wheel farthest away from the master.rr/lr/rf/lf should be the proper sequence.
