Project "Burly 'Burb" continues...Update11/1/03

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" has begun....

We do, I'm out right now but we'll be getting more soon.....

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" has begun....

what do you meen you underestimated burbs power /forums/images/graemlins/burb.gif

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" has begun....

My 'burb needs more beans, no question. I'm not exactly power mad but it spends more time in 3rd gear at highway speed than I would prefer. For what the truck does, it'll be fine with some fairly simple upgrades to the existing motor like headers, maybe a chip and a good tune up. But it doesn't have any extra and I sure won't be putting 37's on it and expecting to use the overdrive gear.

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...

would you have stuck the 1/2 ton axles under it if you still had them or still go 3/4 cuz it is heavy and tows maybe ? just curious .

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...

I do still have the 1/2T axles but I wasn't too thrilled with the idea of locking up the 28 spline 10 bolt under a pretty big truck. I did wheel it some and it did OK (didn't break) but for a truck that is often bigger than the other vehicles I'm with and has to get me and my family out of the sticks, I like the FF design, and it's nice to know I CAN'T break it. The real kicker was having the axle with the locker ready to put in, geared 4.56 and all. I put in a super cheapo gearset in the front and now it's done. Except sometimes I wish I had 4.88's or 5.13's when I'm running down the highway.

i meant the set of axles from the /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif , that are now on my /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif . /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...

Now I get it. Real good chance those axles would have gone right into the 'burb. I do like the brake size on a 3/4T though. Strength wise the 10/12 would be entirely adequate and the Warn FF kit used nice size wheel bearings so I'd be happy with that. Brakes would be the only drawback and I could always go to a larger aftermarket rotor in front to upgrade somehow.

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...

Any updates on this Beast??
Nice to know I'm not the only one into the "SubZone". I have a '78 Subur project, Just need to swap the front hubs for 8 lug and I'm 3/4T all the way around.. D44 up front/14FF rear/4" lift/35BFGMT's.. FI 454 waiting in the garage..

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...

Nothing new on the 'burb, We've been putting a good bit of work into getting wally (the K5) fixed up. And the 'burb doesn't really need much added to it, it's OK for it's mission just as it is. That's the beauty of that vehicle, it's a quick, easy buildup and takes us camping very well, thank you.
Most of the new projects are going to be kind of dull, like new exhaust, a tune up, etc. It is getting to be time for bumpers though, that'll be fun.
I think we're going to get started on the crewcab project soon, and we have a 1-ton single cab in the works going on now too. In addition to my brother's tube chassis buggy. And continuing work on wally to make it more trail friendly. Never any shortage of fun at our shop.

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...Update 5/30/03

Nothing too exciting on this one, but good to keep in mind:
I've always been a bit disappointed in the power from the TBI 350, especially since the 14FF went in with the bigger tires. Even with 4.56's it's a dog at highway speeds. So before the last camping trip (mother's day) I decided to do a little tuneup on it along with the oil change. We had to tow a small camper trailer for a buddy and needed all the power it could muster. So I got a new cap, rotor and spark plugs and it's a good thing, they were all shot. The plugs looked like a BB on the end, definitely time for new. The cool thing is I actually got a power increase and milage went up a bit too. Now we're back to running 11-12 mpg with everyday use.
Some exhaust mods are in order next, trying milk all I can from this CID challenged mommy car. Stay tuned for that one.

Thought I'd pass this on, there's probably a lot of power lost right under everyone's nose by not keeping up on the simple stuff.

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...Update 5/30/03

I hear you on this one, they are a bit underpowered with the TBI 350. I put in the 358 with an Elgin cam that's not very big and it woke it up nicely. Has no problem keeping up with a lot of things. Are you intent on keeping the motor fairly stock? If not, thought of trying some 1.6 rockers? That would wake it up nicely. Good to hear that it's coming along well though! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...Update 5/30/03

My main focus so far has been external mods, intake, exhaust, tuning basically. But, some roller rockers can be considered external, kind of. I do have the little roller cam left over from my 383 but that might be a little farther than I want to go with it.
What I'd really like to do is find a turbo for a 6.2L we have here and drop that in. That's plenty of power for what the truck is supposed to do and should do better on milage, especially important on long desert trips or if we use it as a daily driver. But I have a hard time getting rid of a perfectly good EFI motor that does the job and doesn't really require any work right now. I'm sure the 350 will stay for a while.

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...Update11/1/03

Stephen, what did you use to convert your 10b to 8 lug? Was it a bolt on deal? I will be swapping in my 14b rear as soon as the rebuild kit comes in and disc brakes are installed. This would be great for rim uniformity until I can get a D60 put together. Thanks.

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...Update11/1/03

I used some parts we had laying around here from my K5 I think. Basically it's new hubs, rotors, and the caliper mounting brackets, that's all. Easiest thing to do is rob another 8 lug axle for the parts, or get a whole new 8 lug axle that has the same gears as your rear if that applies to your situation.

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...Update11/1/03

Hey Stephen, have a couple of questions for ya. Did you ever get a steering brace kit modified to fit on your Burb? Also where do you have the rear shocks mounted? On the shocks I have noticed since I installed the flip that the driver side shock hits the spring bolt plate when flexing.

Re: Project \"Burly \'Burb\" continues...Update11/1/03

I haven't messed with the box brace yet, I'm kind of holding my breath. I think I may just remove the oil cooler. I'm kicking around other motor work too, so we'll see what happens with it.

Rear shocks are in the factory upper mounts, and on tab mounts on the housing. I used a 1-ton 14 bolt for it so I had to re-do the shock mounts and ended up just using a pair of tabs on each side for the lowers. It's worked out pretty well so far. I'm not too fond of stiff shocks on the single shear factory mounts but for now, it's OK. Shock mounts can be a little finicky, pinion angle can mess with them, along with axle wrap, so some contact isn't surprising. As long as it's not heavy contact, it's not a huge deal, a twin tube shock can take some major rash and still work fine. A monotube on the other hand, will not like being squashed.

Hi, im considering getting your 2.5" shackle flip with a 2.5" tuff country kit for the front, your swaybar disconnects, and some 285/75/16's from a friend. The truck is an '85 K20 burb with a 4spd and i was wondering if 2.5" is enough lift. Also, being a 3/4T it sits higher and comes with larger tires than 1/2t's of the same year. Do the tuff country 2.5" kits differ between 1/2t & 3/4t to make up for the difference in stock ride height? And lastly, how do I tell whether my rear 14blt axle is a 9.5 sf or a 10.5 ff?

9.5 had outboard brake drums a 14blt 10.5 has bolts in center which the axle shaft flange bolts to
