ok so the motor i have for my street rod build im about to start really isnt ment for nitros but if it blows then its time to go bigger and better right :D here are the specs

400
.40 over
5.7 rods
flat tops
balanced rotating assembly
stock gm cast crank :(
well worked over double humps (461 casting iirc)with 2.02/1.60s
1.5 roller rockers
290 advertised duration cam with .538 lift (solid cam, mabye gonna go to lunati solid roller)
victor jr intake
8 quart pan

ok so here is my thought..im running about 11.5 to 1 right now..im gonna out this motor on propane seeing as how its cheaper than the turbo blue ive born the motor on,better for it,and works well with high compression.this is not an all out race motor so im not worried about a minimal power loss but i was thinking about putting the juice on it for the friday night fun.is this a good mix??

not to sure about nitrous to propane, what kinda kit wet or dry? also have you built the heads to handle the propane and high heat that engine will build when its running? cause if you haven't your going to pound the valves into the heads and blow the valve seats out of them in no time ...

Yep, propane is very hard on exhaust valve seats. I have no idea about mixing propane and NOS though.

the heads are VERY well built...i didnt do anything to them when i got them...like i said if it blows it blows..as long as it doesnt take the block with it (hopefully) i wanna build a destroked 400 (377) after this motor goes..im more thinking about the n0s with the pane...both very cold even though the pane is mixed with coolant to warm it up

This can definitely be done. Nitrous is simply more oxygen and you simply need more fuel to get the mixture back to a safe level. That enrichment can come from any hydrocarbon source.

For example you could run the engine on propane and then enrich your nitrous system using your “turbo blue” fuel.

You could run the engine on turbo blue and enrich the nitrous with propane.

And, what you are asking, run the motor in propane and enrich the nitrous with propane as well.

I have personally seen a motor using nitrous with liquid propane enrichment. 1800Hp Viper. They had to put the car on a hub dyno as the tires would just light up once the nitrous hit. It was insane.

All of the above will work it is just a matter of proportions. You will need to do a lot of searching and calculating in order to use the propane as enrichment. It is normally done as liquid propane injection along with the nitrous liquid injection. The challenge is keeping the cylinder pressure consistent in the propane cyl when dumping that much liquid propane that fast. The nice thing about it is you also get the cooling effect of the expanding liquid propane on top of the normal cooling effect of the liquid nitrous expanding. Cold X2, way colder than vapor propane injection.

And as 4x4High said, to run on propane you should have Stelite/sodium exhaust valves and hardened seats. Otherwise you could drop a valve on one of your “full tilt boogie” runs and that might take out the block.

I have been running my SBC on 100% propane since it was new in 1973, we did the valves and seats and have had no issues with them.

........"very well built heads"..........and "Heads built for propane" are 2 different things though.

LPG as a vapor fuel also has zero lubricating property. so your intake valves turn into little grinders with propane. and exhausts, like he said hardened seats and stellite

well i will say this.i know someone who is on this site that has been running propane FOR YEARS with stock heads no problems.mabye he is lucky mabye not.he is gonna wait till they go then replace them but he has ZERO issues

I didn't say stock heads wouldn't work. I just said well built and LPG built are 2 different things. and these are thing you want to see in a LPG head.

....see it's like this. An engine built for 'pane and slapping pane on a stock gasspot is like a fat chick wearing spandex. Just cause she CAN doesn't mean she SHOULD! :doah:
