ive got a project truck that i keep getting more involved with as i go.. i was reading about propane and its a pressurized gas.. this means u can run a carburated engine at any angle.. i think... i probably gonna be gettin a motor for my truck sometime soon and was thinking of some type of fuel ingection but its real costly and the wiring can be a killer on the trail.. to get to the point i was wondering if anyone is runnin propane?? what ar some of the pros and cons of this setup... tanks, lines anything and everything would be a great help thanks..
 
there are some drawbacks. the guys I wheel with run "pane" as they call it. They run forklift bottles and will run out on a full day of wheeling. they shut it off everytime they come to a stop. It doesn't work with a normal gas carb. you have to get a completely new setup, unless you are talking about a blended system.

The truck would run upside down if the oil in the crank didn't have something to say.
 
Pros:
Super simple (no wiring, fuel pump, IAC, TPS, etc to fail)
Propane is cheap
Propane burns very clean so your oil doesn't get nearly as dirty
Runs at any angle

Cons:
Propane is tough to find
The most common (read: cheapest) tanks are small (~7 gallons)
Slightly worse mileage and power (if you keep a gas compression ratio)
 
thanks for the input... im buiolding the motor some time in the future and would proabaly go full propane i dont think i would go dual fuel... and would the junkyards be the best place to find those huge propane tanks... 100lbs or so =...
 
no ****.... thanks i havent looked around much yet becuse i dont have the new motor built yet... would that tank be suitable for the truck and can it take some abuse... if u have any idea... u never know whats gonna happen..
 
sorry for the hijack but what about running propane on a dd? Im fixin to start a new project and will be building a motor for it. I already know quite a bit about it and would like to build my new motor specifically for propane. There are at least 2 filling stations in my home town and I could get a tank large enough to last me a couple of weeks so how practical do you think it would be? would it be a bad idea? I would prefer to stay away from a dual fuel setup if I could.

especially with a big tank, i see it being perfectly practical. weigh your options though. propane is great, but it is possible to do EFI cheap as well.
 
the tank on up in the back of my truck there is 100 gallons. at 80% legal fill capacity, you're getting roughly 80 gallons of fuel. it used to run this truck in stock trim around everyday daily driving for about 2 weeks (350 sm465)

that tank fits perfectly in the bed of a pickup.

how do you fill it? most of the places aroung here have their tanks fenced in making them hard to get close to with a truck.

I used to work at a gas station where we filled tanks. we would weigh them on a scale to make sure they were full but not overfilled.
 
the tank does fit very nicely right behind the cab... its definatley a possibliity for the new motor... would it burn about the same amount of gas u say or a little better.. even in a 454??? i just realyy like the fact its like a cheap efi and u can run any angle.. but u still ahve to watch ur oil and such.... and can u tell ur runnin pane by a different sound or smell..
 
sound isn't different enough to be noted, smells like a bbq grill lol
 
i've read you only lose about 1/10 per gal on propane, gas 10/10 a gal,(10/10 being what ever your mpg is) propane 9/10 per gal. a lose of 1/10,was told this by some1 running propane. i'm thinking of going to propane but cant find any place to buy new mixers to replace my carb, and i've googled it all the ways i can think of, i found tanks that will fit where your stock gas tank is but can't find the rest of the system! any1 know the best place to get the stuff for the swap?
 
you need Impco propane components.........as far as I've seen...by FAR the most common propane components availiable.......for cars trucks busses forklifts, zoombooms, genies.....anything that'll burn LPG

I'm pretty sure about the last 2......its been so long since I actually looked at them. around here go to the junk yard and you;re tripping over the stuff...... all pieces have overhaul kits availiable.......cheap and easy to do yourself.
 
You need a model E regulator.

For the lock off you can either use the vff30 which is a automatic type lock off or you can go electric which uses a switch to controll the shut off.
