Proper backspace and wheel size for Dana 60 and 14BFF

I'll probably go with a 17" rim so I don't have to grind the calipers up front.

These trucks came from the factory with 16" and 16.5" wheels. There is no need to grind the calipers with either of those sizes. EVER.

The only time people grind, is so they can run 15" wheels on the Dana 60. You can run a 15" wheel on a 14bff without any modification.

Why are you against grinding anyway? The only downside to it, is that it sucks to do the actual grinding.

Not a great quality picture, but this is a set of 35x12.50x16.5" BFG Mud Terrains on stock GM 16.5x6.75" steel wheels.

Once again, not a great picture, but these are the 37x12.50x16.5" military take off Goodyears, on the same rims.

I personally think 17" rims is the way to go, no caliper grinding, and better tire selection/rim selection.

As for rims I love my BlackRock steelies, they're cheap and come in a variety of styles, sizes, offsets etc etc. It cost me about $90 per rim, and they had to fab a set for me.

Here's what 37"x12.50" MTRs look like on 17"x8" BlackRock rims with 3.5" backspacing. Note that these are on 3/4 ton axles.

I'm pretty satisfied with how they came out :D

You ONLY HAVE TO GRIND with 15" wheels.

You're correct, and there's no need for me to argue the point. Since 16-16.5" rim/tire selections are being phased out, and becoming more expensive to invest in, the way I see it is you can either go for 15" (grinding required based on backspacing, and a narrow selection in a 8 lug flavor) or 17" and up.

16" tires/wheels getting phased out?

I wouldn't worry about them disappearing overnight, but they are becoming more rare from the factory every day. Not even sure you can buy a new 3/4 or 1 ton truck with those "little" 16's any more, and not even sure about how many 1/2 ton 4wd trucks have standard 16's anymore. Besides for simply not being available from the factory I know 16's won't fit on a lot of them because of brake size.

The aftermarket is going to support the biggest market trend, which is 17" or bigger tires.

Summit shows 1,557 17s, and 1,522 16s... be a long time 'till 16s are scarce.

Exactly, if someone bought a set of 16” tires and wheels today they will be sick of the wheels long before 16s become scarce or extinct. I personally have not found any issues with not having enough tire options in 16” to choose from. The hardest part if finding a load range E tire in any 315 regardless if they are 16 to 22 hey bro tires

These are 315/75R16 x 8.5 with -6 back spacing (I would have swore these were -4.25 BS but the box they came in says -6). They tuck into the wheel wells nicely but yet do not rub on anything (I hate wide wheel with crazy offset that stick out). These wheels are inexpensive too. $115 through Desert Rat. I just bought a second set of these to pay the K10 back when the Suburban stole the K10s tires and wheels. On this second set Discount Tire price matched Desert Rat so that saved me the shipping to buy them from Desert Rat and have them shipped up from Arizona. Depending on the trail surface I’ll run these down to 15 PSI but typically I run 20 PSI in the front and 25 in the rear given the load of the camper. Never had a bead problem….yet

Same wheels and tires on the Burb. The only difference is the burb has a D44 front axle whereas the K10 has a D60.

I agree that you will be able to get 16" tires for a long time, but depending on the application the sizes and styles are more limited and will slowly get worse over time. If you are staying with the smaller sizes like 35" or below you can get just about anything right now, but start looking at the larger sizes and the selection really shrinks.

Used to run 16" rims on my Blazer with 38's but got rid of them when ready for new tires simply because the selection of 38" or bigger tires was extremely limited. On the other hand I do run aftermarket 16" rims on my 2500HD but also only run 285/75's on it and not worried about tire selection....of course at the rate I drive it the tires will outlast the truck.
