I have owned both throughout the years and currently restoring a M1009 with civilian goodies to get the best of both worlds.
Pros:
1. love the 6.2 and they run on anything with lots of low end torque and impossible to stall with a TH400. Put a plow on this truck and it will be the best plow truck you have.
2. Like said here before. Most of them can be found in pretty good shape as far as rot and rust but some are just as bad as any too.
3. Mileage is usually pretty low. Found my first with just 56k my second with 26k.
4. All creature comforts can be added pretty easily except the A/C.
5. If you don't care about your truck and are going off road (not rock climbing and extreme stuff) it is pretty much ready as is. Everything is painted and who gives a **** about the finish.
6. Tow rings and a HD brush guard, skid plates
7. Standard suspension is better than civilian K5 (no rear sagging)
8. Hydra-boost brake system
9. Strong stock steel wheels
10. People are going to give you a lot of thumbs up
11. 20-22 mpg stock (what do those gas jobs give?)
12. easy to convert to a single 12v alternator and starter
13. parts are easy to find because lots of people think they are ****!
14. has factory gun rack installed LOL
15. turn up the pump slightly on the 6.2 and drive a different animal (don't know why more don't discuss doing this, no longer slow on take off)
Cons:
1. People seem to think it, things that come on and in it are ****, I.E. brush guard, TH400, 10bolts, 6.2. Everyone has an opinion yet most have never owned one.
2. Noisy, sparse interior
3. cold in the winter because of the lack of insulation
4. hot in the summer, no explanation needed
5. If wanting to repaint the OD paint is a bitch to remove or work
6. Did I say people are going to tell you how ****ty it is.
7. Not super fast but can do 70mph down the highway all day long
8. Not easy to start in super cold weather
9. starter is 24v and only starter, everything else is 12v (it's not a hummer!)
10. two 12v alternators (never had one fail though)
11. military glow plug relay not reliable (easy fix with a push button)(most civilian units have done the same)
12. glass is all clear, no tint
If the M1009 is so ****ty why would they bring the money they bring? Why would I be going through the trouble to build mine? It all comes down to what people like plain and simple. I happen to like the look of the M1009 with the tow rings and the brush guard others seem to dislike. If you like a M1009 buy the damn thing and enjoy. Remember, you'll easily get 450 miles on that little 25gal tank too.
