Thinking of doing the winch remote wired in the cab, who has it and what do you like and not like. Or anyone who has any input. :D

I have one, it's the only one I use anymore, I love it.

The upside is that it's MUCH easier to use and you don't have any connection issues between the winch and controller (if you wire it well).

The downside is you won't be able to use it if you can't be in the truck. If, say, your truck was on it's roof, wedged, and you needed your winch to help recovery it would be tough to operate your winch inside the cab. I've never seen it happen but I figure it could

I've never owned a winch before so I'm ignorant on the topic. Could you hard wire it into the cab and also have the option of plugging in a controler on the outside?

I will be buying a big winch soon though!

It would be nice to have a remote in the cab and also be able to operate the winch at the front as well.

My cable is long enough, as the same with most winches, that I can operate it in the cab and have done that on a couple of pulls where I had to hold the brake while pulling someone else out.

Even with an in cab remote, I would likely still hook up the controller to rewind the cable at the winch.

I have a warn xp and am able to use a remote and have it wired in the cab, I used an orange extension cord with ground plug, I think the wire colors even match, i used a flat 4 wire trailer connector in the engine bay for removal of the winch without undoing the wiring, I also never use the remote anymore, I also wired an on off switch in so if you hit the rocker/in out switch by accident nothing happens.

Adding an in cab winch control does not affect the stock control, you can use either.

Chris, Jesse
you guys have any pics of your in cab switches? Just want some more options other than the few I found in google. TIA

Back when I used to help build winches, no one had ever heard of remote switches.
They were all in cab.

Some of the solenoids we used had buttons on the front for manual use, and so you could raise the hood and wind the cable in by yourself.
We quit using them, because they were not power buttons, just a manual way to push the contact wafer against the contacts.

If you pushed lightly, sometimes the contacts would arc and weld. At which time things got really interesting.

We went to a second switch under the hood for folks to wind up the cable.

Years later, I bought a Desert Dynamics winch to put on my father's truck. It came with a remote cable only, but would reach into the cab.

Trouble was, it plugged in, and when you needed the winch, the control cable was buried in the tool box somewhere.

So, I hooked up a switch in the cab that paralleled the cable plug.
Used a toggle, that was spring loaded to center (off) in reverse, and latching in pull.

Worked fine.

Upper right corner; the red covered switch enables the thing -- keeps one from accidentally bumping the winch in too much -- and the black toggle is up/down momentary, spring returns to the center. Push up and it powers out, down pulls in.

yours looks as if it is on the right of the steering wheel?

where is everyone putting them, left hand or right hand?

My switch panel replaced the radio, so right side, bottom of the dash. Mind you, I also have the wired remote. As mentioned it's much handier for pulling the wire in solo.

I also dual wired mine. Most of the time you are winching from in the cab but you never know. Easy to have both. Fordum led me to the small momentary switches.

No need to disconnect the inside one, it's hard wired to the signal wires. Basically you're just putting another switch into the system that can also make the winch work (in addition to the regular controller). Either one will work the winch.

I'm at work so I can't take a pic until the 21st when I get off but mine is mounted in the ash tray...It closes and you can't see it......Noone will play with the switch that way...
