Prying the fender emblems off the K5 from the outside?

I have a K5 in need of a partial paint job, including the front fenders. I cut up the rear wheel fenders to weld in new sheet metal (yep, the usual Chevy rust), so I was able to get to the Silverado emblems in front of the tail lights from the inside, and found they were attached with metal barrel clips. I'm assuming then that the front fender emblems are fastened the same way, and that it should be possible to just stick something flat behind them and pry them out from the outside? Getting to them from the inside would basically mean I'd have to pull the whole damn fenders first, and that just feels like way too much work for two shltty emblems. I'd like to get them off in one piece though since they are in good shape and I intend to put them back. They include the diesel part that can't be had new from LMC or other aftermarket suppliers from what I've seen. Has anyone here taken these emblems off from the outside in one piece? If you have any tips on how to work it I'd be grateful.

front fender ones usaly have 2 speed nuts holding them in the fender.

and you need to remove the fender to get to them.

You need to pull the nuts off. You will break the posts off otherwise, and you cannot fasten them any other way that will last.

Ok, thanks for the info, guys. I guess there's not much choice but to pull the fenders then, unless I can carefully mask and paint around them. Those areas are just fine anyways; only the edges of the wheel housing had any rust, but I intend to paint the whole area for a seamless look.

What's the reason they went with nuts on the front emblems when they obviously thought those metal barrel clips that you can just press into the holes were sufficient enough for the back ones? Difference in weight?

On edit, another theory: The front emblems went on before the fenders were assembled, since all trucks got them. They would then be fastened with nuts, since it's a somewhat more secure fit. But which trim package the truck were to get would not be established until later down the line, when all sheet metal had been put together. Thus the only option for the rear emblems was to fasten them from the outside only. Sounds about right?

I removed all my emblems from the outside. I just pryed them off. The biggest thing is to be carefull not to pry UP on one end or the other too much or you will crack and break the emblems, those speed nuts come off pretty easily when you pry the emblem off. I just used some heavy duty adhesive to put the front fender ones back on , its some stuff I get thru my company called CURB MARKER Adhesive, its made for attaching Fiber Optic badges to sidewalks, so they have to be super secure. lol. I didnt replace the back emblems ,instead I had the holes welded up and then just did the usual body work, cant tell there was anything there at all now.

I just took mine off and found that each had one of the posts broken off. They were held on for a number of years with 2-sided emblem tape. The posts that weren't broken were held in with barrel clips.

I filled the holes and intend to run without fender badging.
