So I am getting ready to install one of these pumps in my 73 and it didn't come with any instructions. Seems pretty straight forward but there are two things I can't immediately figure out:

1) My old power steering pump has a threaded shaft with a nut on it. Not sure if the pulley is press fit and the nut is just a backup but the PSC shaft is smooth so my question is what the heck do I do with the pulley? Can I reuse my old one or do I have to get something else?

2) The new pump came with 4 O-Rings. I know the large one seals the body of the pump in the reservoir but I have no idea what the other 3 small ones are for. The lines maybe?

Any advice would be awesome, especially on the pulley situation. I haven't pulled the old pump out yet cause I am not sure what to do about the pulley.

Ok, I found the answer to half my question. The 3 small o-rings seal the flow control valve and the mounting studs on the back of the pump to the reservoir. Now just gotta figure out the pulley.

I'd help, but that's earlier than my stuff. Hopefully someone can chime in. Can you get instructions? I'm thinking for some reason that the instructions that came with mine covered a few different types, since a few things changed over the years.

I found the instructions for the AGR version and i talks about a press on pulley and looks the same as the PSC so Im just gonna pull the old one and see what happens.

I don't know anything about the older pumps/pulleys, but my pulley came off the serpentine setup I bought. It was just a press on fit to the PSC pump.

Your pulley is not a press on on the old pump. Take the nut off and pull the pulley off. You will see the shaft is tapered and keyed on your old pump. You will have to get a different pulley for the AGR pump.

Probably anything that doesn't have a nut. I know my 85 was right, but it starts way before that. I remember ORD warning me that car pumps and truck pumps are sometimes different in their shaft dia. Let me check tonight to see if I still have one of my pulleys left over, ill shoot it out ur way. Also, my serpentine setup from '93 1500 had the right size pulley.

I've run into all sorts of problems with pulleys not lining up when you mis-match applications. As far as I can tell, just about every application (a 305 in a car, a 305 in a truck, a 307 in an Olds, etc) COULD have used a different offset on the pulleys. It can be a real pain.

Well I found the pulley that works, It was from an 81 Camaro of all things. I needed a dual groove pulley since I have AC and that was the one that fit.

Unfortunately all that work was for nothing so far because I can't for the life of me get the new pump in the old reservoir. Gonna get a new reservoir and see if I can get it in that. PSC told said it can be a total paint to get it in there and I can certainly vouch for that so far.

I hate to say this, but I had NO luck re-sealing the pump to the reservoir, and I'm not the only one I know who has had the problem. It continually leaked, even after I took great pains rebuilding it.

I ended up buying a new pump with reservoir already installed.

I hope your luck is better than mine.

DOH! I was afraid someone was going to say that. I called PSC and they told me it was incredibly hard to do so my confidence is not high.

I do recall that when the pump was assembled (no idea if GM or reman by the time I got it) one of the bolts had been cinched down really tight, and had warped the reservoir in that location. I really didn't see any issues with the reservoir to pump seal, and even where the bolt had been snugged down too tight the seal seemed to be good, so I don't know.

After hearing from others the problems with getting a good seal, I figured I knew better than everyone lol. If anything my failure was not trying to straighten that bolt hole out (similar to perimeter valve covers that are bent from the bolts) but still, for it to leak was surprising.

If PSC is saying that, then I expect it's more than just a sometime problem. Bad thing is, you won't know until you get it mounted. Mine only leaked when running, once it cooled down nothing. Just a few drips, but I don't believe in leaks. Especially with as little PS fluid as there is.

Just an update here, I got a new reservoir and the pump installed flawlessly by HAND this time. I didn't have to use c-clamps or mallets or anything so clearly my old reservoir was jacked.

Good to hear J

one step closer to getting out, gotta get out before it gets much hotter
