How much RTV are you guys using when replacing gaskets on a transmission or any other component. I don't think I used enough and now I have some leaks. Should this be just a light film of RTV or should it be slathered on there?

Many people will tell you to use a light film, I use something in between what you described.
Make sure that both surface are as clean and gasket/sealant free as possible and then clean the surfaces with brake cleaner, laquer thinner, etc.

thanks hopefully i get it right this time. I think not coating the bolt threads might've been part of the problem as well.
