And any advice on getting the broken bolt out of that top hole? I just left it in there before and it never leaked, but I figured since I have it apart I would try getting it out. There's hardly anything to bite onto with vise grips.

Just open. Could allways try to drill the bolt and use an easy out but it seams like I allways just end up breaking off the easy out too.

Okay, cuz my glove box says I have the Gov-bomb. My axle must've been replaced/rebuilt. And how do I see what kinda gear ratio I've got?

Ratio is stamped on the edge of the ring gear.

Lol, how the hell am I supposed to count all the way to the back of the diff? I'm not really sure which ones to count. I know the big one, but there's like 4 small gears in the middle, do I count all them?

If it's stamped, then you're lucky. If not, jack up the tires, throw it in neutral, and count. I used a screw driver to mark the tooth I started on. The little guys in the center are spider gears. Don't worry about them. They're the ones you weld to make your own locker. The pinion gears are the ones connected to the shaft that bolts to your drive shaft.

I've always seen it stamped on the ring gear . . usually like 41-10 which would be 4.10 . . divide the big number by the little one . . and the small spider gears ya don't have to count if ya do have to count just the ring gear and pinion but should be stamped on it . just spin it around and look for some numbers

Yeah, I see where the pinion gear is now. Well I don't see it stamped on my ring gear, and I doubt its there. How could I count my pinion gears with the spider gears in the way? Can I just pull the diff out and count them? Or is it not that easy?

ya spun the ring gear around and looked on the side faceing ya . .whiping it off? somewhere i got a pic of the gear in my 14 bolt stamped but don't know where right now and you can pull the carrier but got to remove the carrier cross pin and bolt and the c-clips on the axle also have to make sure ya keep the shims on each side on the same side along with bearing caps and races. . . . .to keep everything to same and not mess up the backlash setting on the gear . .

oh yeah can can you see any of the pinion teeth . . ya can mark on and spin the tire and count em as they go by till it comes back to your mark . . . whole lot easier and less stuff to mess up then pulling the carrier

Sounds easier to just leave it a mystery. It sounds like a lot of work to do, especially when it's 25 degrees outside.

i'd jack up one said check the ring gear good . . if nothing then rotate the tire one turn and count how many times the drivewhaft rotate (in neutral of course) . . less then 2 and 3/4 is times 2.73's just little more then 3 then 3.08's . .3 3/4 times 3.73, 4 and less then 1/4 more then 4.10's . . 4 1/2 ish then 4.56's . .

It's a different axle, but look for markings like this on the ring gear.

Look at the last two pics here.

yeah 7th and 8th pic is the numbers i'm talking about more so the 8th pic with 41-10 . . . but probably gonna be different 41-11 for 3.73's can't remember what 3.08's and 2.73's come out to be

Even if it was a rebuilt diff, it will still have the markings?

gotta get the gear from somewhere . . my 4.88's in the 14 bolt had numbers on em . . the 6.33 for the 9 inch sitting in my back room has numbers on em . . the 14 bolt with 3.73s in my back yard has numbers on em . . oh and the 12 bolt with 4.10 richmond gears has numbers on em . .the yukon i ordered for my dana 44 had numbers on it . . oh yeah and the 20 ton rockwells under my truck had numbers on em :haha:

I don't believe I've ever heard of a GM gearset NOT being stamped with that info. Probably a production line thing.

Never dealt with aftermarket gears, no idea if they stamp similar as well.

Okay, so I found my ring gear stamp today, and it reads this 1 GM 1235 128 12 41 8 85.

So from what I've read, this means I have a 3.41 gear ratio, correct?
