i am lookin at buyin a suburban can you guys give me and idea on mileage difference and how good the 454 350 and 6.2l diesel are for pulling trailers and the advantages and disadvantages in the three

454 - crappy mileage, great power, expensive
350 - better mileage, decent power, inexpensive
6.2D - best mileage, best torque for pulling, price varies depending on the build-up

I'd give the big block the nod for towing, and the 6.2 the nod for mileage. The 350 falls in between the extremes.

If your thinking 4x4, remember, Burbs never can with the 454 in 4x4s. You'll be looking for someone who did a swap or you'll be doing it yourself. I wouldn't tow with a 350. When I need to tow, I use one of the trucks with a 454.

454 is by far better than the 6.2 but you pay for it in gas mileage.

at its best the 6.2 put out

280 ft lbs at 2000 rpm with 150 hp at 3600...

the tbi 454 made 385 ft lbs of torque at 1600 rpm and 230 at 3600...

the mpfi 454 made 410 ft lbs at 3200 and 290 hp at 4000...

the 6.2 is way overerated.

Find some dyno numbers to back that up and maybe some people would listen...

If you're just going to quote 'advertised' numbers from a manual i doubt you're gonna convince anybody of anything...especially if they've actually driven a diesel.

I have driven a 6.2.... that is why im arguing on this. with a turbo i could see why everybody thinks they are so awesome but NA i wasn't impressed.

When heard it was a 6.2 diesel i said damn that thing must be a beast but i was more than disapointed when i got behind the wheel.

there are plenty of others that would agree a bbc is better for towing than a 6.2(your one of em).

kinda hard for me to accept the idea that they would "advertise" their 6.2's, which are known for being dogs, with less power than it actually has... where is this dyno test?

First of all you need to drive a 'J' code in a 3/4 ton or one ton. more power and gearing that is suited to towing. A 6.2 in a K5 is set to make max fuel economy and often had brutal gearing...

I'm not going to further hi-jack this thread by posting the 6.2 dyno stuff and taking us even further off topic. It's been posted multiple times in the diesel forum.

I know the 454s make GREAT pulling power. Mountainexploer runs 454s in perty much everything he owns and when he pulled my ford home whith his suburban we were climbing hills like there was nothing behind it. But if your not pulling alot of realy heavy stuff and cost is an issue i would definetly go for the the 350. i dont know much about the deisels though, so the 6.2 might be a better option than the 350.
