I am trying to pulling the passenger front half-shaft on a donor k5, I got the ENORMOUS nut off the bolt holding the rotor assembly, (steering knuckle?), but there appears to be some sort of bits down inside preventing the large bolt from coming down, do I need a special tool to remove this? Very frustrated... :/

In order to remove the axle shaft you need to remove

(1) Brake caliper

(2) Locking hub

(3) Outer spindle lock nut (requires spindle nut socket)

(4) Keyed washer with all the holes in it

(5) Inner spindle lock nut

(6) Brake hub/rotor assembly

(7) 6 nuts holding the caliper bracket and spindle

(8) Remove both the caliper bracket and spindle

(9) Slide the axle out

Thanks. I will try this tonight after work. I wasn't removing the locking hub. Also the keyed washer is what I was looking at, does it come out the top?

yeah sounds to me like you are trying to take out the ball joint which I dont think is possible without having the axleshaft out first. Start over and follow 4X4HIGH's instructions.

If you havent removed the locking hub then you are looking at the wrong keyed washer. Once you get that locking hub out you will see all the stuff that was mentioned.

You're working on the wrong part to remove the axle. Sounds to me like you removed the upper ball joint nut and then are seeing the preload insert that has 4 cutouts in it for the use of a spanner socket. If you have moved that insert you will now need to reset the preload.
