Decided to pull the drive train out my 84 K5. It's got a 350/400/208. I got the transfer case out without too much trouble. Next the transmission. Get everything unbolted, or so I thought. Found the two bolts I missed, which were a major pita. Anyhow, supporting the back of the tranny with an engine hoist and from underneath with a huge floor jack, I can't get the stupid thing to separate from the engine. I know all the bolts are out, because it'll back away about 1/4" to 1/2" from the engine, but that's it. I've tried jacking it up, lowering it, wiggling it, pulling on it, cussing at it, prying it, but nothing works. What gives?! HELP!!!

Shifter linkage is undone. Cable that runs to the carb is undone. Brace to the motor is undone. Bottom half of the bell housing is removed. Starter is pulled out of the way.

What exactly are you talking about when you say torque converter bolts?

The bolts that hold the torque converter onto the flexplate(flywheel). Should be 6.

I can't see that holding the tranny from coming out unless the torque converter it somehow stuck on the tranny

The bolts bolt the flywheel to the torque converter. If the plate is still on not showing the flywheel you won't see the bolts and with the starter off it's gonna be harder to turn the motor over. I used a screwdriver in the flywheel holes to turn it

Sounds like the tranny is getting bound up, because the engine is trying to drop backwards since it is only suported by the mounts near the front, use the engine hoist to lift the back of the engine slightly ( probably 1/2" to an 3/4" then use the floor jack to lift the tranny up by the pan , use a chunk of plywood or a couple of 2x4's aganinst the pan to keep from damaging it, lift both the engine and the tranny evenly untill the gap at the top and bottom of the bellhousing is even, then you know everything is being suported without load on it, then turn the jack so it is pointing straight back and roll the tranny back then you can lower it.

Also as others have mentioned remove the 3 torque convertor bolts if you haven't already, you can remove the tranny it bolted to the engine but you risk damaging the seal on the tranny, and you will make a good sized mess when a few quarts of ATF spill out.

This is the way I have changed quite a few chevy tranny's and has always worked well for me :) , just post up if you have any more problems

it is easy to remove the 3 tourque converter bolts...
you can easily damage your converter if you try and keep it connected... plus it's gonna puke all over...
