Putting 1-ton gear in a 1991 K5

Also he wants it to look good.

Not sure what this is supposed to mean.

Mine are trimmed and I think the look damn good!

Thanks for the side pic b/c it shows clearly what it would look like to shave the back of the front fender. I might be up for that, but my preference is to keep the body free of trimming. Still think I like the uncut look better. Cool looking bumpers on your truck. I still haven't decided if I'm going to do a custom bumper or keep the factory one. It has the factory chrome bumper front and rear with the two factory push-bumpers on the front bumper. I really like the way that old factory bumper looks but would like to add a winch and somehow cover the slight gap made by the body lift.

Anyone have a pic of a factory bumper raised for a body lift and possibly with a hidden or semi-hidden winch mount? I'd be willing to cut a hole where the license plate goes to accomodate the fairlead, or just move the bumper up and mount the fairlead directly below. Any thoughts on this?

I had a few more questions imbedded in this post that I didn't get a response to. So, I'm reposting them in hopes that someone can clear a few of them up for me. Thanks.

Forgive my ignorance, but will the TBI from the 350 mate up to the 454? The 454 has a Holly 650 (I think, but it could be an 800). What all is involved in going from carbed to TBI?

BDS springs seem to be all the rage here. I'll probably get flamed for this, but I was just going to use a Skyjacker 8" kit (springs all the way around) plus my 3" bodylift to clear the tires. I also looked at the articles on here about using the longer springs up front and moving the shackle. Looks like a good idea but in all honesty that might be a little more than I want to mess with right now. What's the deal with BDS springs? I've heard of them before but not sure where to get them, or why they are so popular. Any help in that area would be appreciated.

The 700R4 seems to work pretty well (no major clunks, bangs, or slips), but I hear everyone talk about building theirs up. What all needs to be done to build up a 700R4?

Thanks for any insight into these that can be given.

THere was no "between the lines" comment there. You have one of the best cutting jobs I have ever seen, your K5 is one of my top 5 favorites here.

Regardless, there is no reason to go into a debate of cutting vs. not cutting, we have all done it and it is useless.

If he wants a clean looking truck that retains somewhat of the "cherried out" look than not cutting would look best. Thats all I was saying basically.

Pic after I lifted my bumpers 3", none of the suspension manufacturers make bumper brackets for our trucks. I had to make my own. :D

I've thought about the winch myself, about where I could hide one because I don't want it exposed, they are big and ugly. I didn't come up with much, nor did I devote a lot of time to the idea either.

Thanks for the pics. Looks much better with the bumpers raised. Mine still has the factory air-dam, so I think I will try and have my buddy fab a bracket for the bumpers and the winch so that I can flip the winch upside down, and then notch the air-dam so that the fairlead will be about the only thing exposed. You'll still be able to see part of the winch, but it seems to me to be about the only option for a semi-hidden mount.

You've got a great looking truck. I think I will definitely have to go with the Boggers. Just too gnarly looking not go that route. It's a second truck anyway, so if I want comfort I'll drive my suburban!

I'd throw the air dam in the garbage. It does no good on a lifted vehicle, completely defeats the purpose and most importantly it's ugly as hell.

ok im going to but in to the street truck thread here and give my 2c. i think you need to pull out that BL, cut it down to about 1.5 or 2in, and re-install. i had a 3in bl on my orange truck when i bought it and it sucked. raised COG and didnt help my clearance at all except for the rockers. do about a 6in susp then go to your buds body shop and trim the fenders. if he is good at what he does, he should be able to get some lines that look like the factory fenders. this will keep your COG much lower and allow you to stuff better if you decide to wheel it. 11 inches of lift is to tall and top heavy, my orange truck with a 6in susp and 3in body felt like it was going to roll every time i got off camber. just try to keep it as low as possible and you will thank yourself later. just my 2c

Go 11" of lift, maybe 12", leave the fenders alone and drive it. It'll look great and plow through the mud just fine. :D

6 inches of lift, 38.5x12.5x15 on 15x10 rims.
I don`t rub at all when I stuff my tires.
get the dana 70, they only hang down 3/4 of an inch more than a 60, and they are totally smooth on the bottom, hugh gear selection, and they are rated slightly stronger than a 14bff.

To answer some questions about the fuel injection from a 350 to a 454...it will not swap. I believe the sensors will but the manifold is different and the injectors are different. 454 TBI itself requires 28 lbs of fuel pressure where as the 350 TBI only requires 14 lbs. I myself have a bigblock from a 90 model SRW 4X4 one ton sitting at my shop and am debating on pulling my 350 TBI and installing the "rat" motor but someone swapped the 454 TBI for a carb(why...I don't know) so I am gonna wait till I get the proper parts.

Hope this helps...BTW...go with fuel injection on whichever motor you use...you will not regret it.

Fuel Injection is the preferred, so I think I'll stick with the 350 for now, and then look into building up the 454 later with the TBI. While there is a higher probability that I will not abuse this thing, I want to build it so that it has the capability if need be. In other words, I'd like to go with fuel injection since I now it has many advantages over carbed when wheeling even though I probably won't wheel it much. Thanks for the info on the swap guys.

11 inch lift for 38s..... Yikes, that will be quite tall.

What do you plan to do with this truck?
(mall poser/show and shine <---> wheelin/rockcrawler)

well that looks like this on a fullsize...
:cool1:

currently re-sizing the pic as this one was HUGE

I don't know about the Skyjacker springs, but BDS and Tuff Country are much better riding than most of the other lift springs out there. My Superlifts ride like an empty dumptruck.

Lol. Yeah, I heard Superlift springs were brutal. Most of the guys I have talked to here in Houston say the Skyjackers ride really nice. Of course, almost all of them had gone from Superlift to Skyjacker so I guess anything would be better than that.

Rootbreaker, good looking truck. Thanks for the pic.
