I need some help from some experienced q-jet builders. so far I have built three before the the one I did recently and I have a manual so I have a good bearing on what Im doing.

so I took this one to a friend that builds them a lot and had him dip it in his cleaner to get it good and clean. the fuel wells on the bottom had been epoxied and he cleaned it all off and said that mine looked good and shouldnt leak.

every one I have built I have epoxied the fuel wells, just as extra protection even if they didnt leak. so heres my question, when I drive my truck it idles like crap but drives good. misfires a little, prolly because Ive fouled a plug or two. I know how to adjust it but right now my main problem is starting. after I shut it off it floods the engine and I have to hold the pedal on the floor while I crank it to get it to start back. the venturies are not leaking and I have the float set low and I know that the bowl is not getting too full. so is it possible that my fuel wells are leaking enough gas while it sits to flood the engine that bad?

I did pull the carb today and the bottoms of the fuel wells are wet like theyve at least leaked a little. should I go ahead and pull the base plate and epoxy the fuel wells? It didnt do that when I first put it on. It started and ran good with no problems, then after I driving home one day I shut it off and about an hour later came back and it was flooded. the longer it sits the worse it gets. thanks

Pull the base plate off to epoxy them? I thought you could just epoxy the two tubes that stick out the bottom? Thats where mine are epoxied. I am no expert by any means but here are a couple things to look into.
First- check your oil and smell it for gas oder. You don't want gas to be washing out your engine. Ask me how I know. If you smell gas it is dumping fuel past the rings and into the pan thinning the oil. Gas doesn't make the best lubricant.

Second- With the truck running, screw the air fuel screws all tehway in and see if it bogs the engine down and kills it. If there is no change in the engine then it is dumping fuel.

No matter what, I think it would be wise to epoxy the tubes. I have never figured out why they leave them open to begin with. Let us know how it turns out.

yup new float. those things have a bad habit of soaking up gas over the years so I always replace them with a rebuild.

and yeah I pull the base plate off to epoxy the tubes. the ends to stick out enough to get just the ends but I like to make sure and get them good cause Ive seen them leaking pretty bad before. and I already tried changing my idle mixture screws with little or no change but I also have a small vacum leak from a cracked hose so Ill have to change that before Ill really be able to adjust it. Ill pull it off tomorrow and seal it up and see how it runs then.

also one other thing, way off the current subject but can anyone tell me the symptoms of a bad cam? I had a guy listen to my motor run today and he said it sounds like its got a flattened lobe or two. it pops and backfires in the upper rpms.
