Well I decided to try to rebuild a q-jet to replace the Edelbrock in my truck.. the P/O put in a 750 CFM performer.. wayy to much carb for this engine :eek1:

And now I am stuck :(

The main jets are frozen in place and after attempting to break 'em free I boogered not one.. but both screw slots :doah:I've never done that before and now I'm kinda bummed.

How can I get them out and can I buy replacement jets pretty easily? Already bought the little gasket kit for $32 :doah:

Never done it before either, and I've pulled quite a few. Only thing I can think of is to try and TIGHTEN them just a hair, assuming the flats are still good going that direction, and if you can break the bond with the carb, then you might be able to turn them out the right way. Some penetrating oil might help too.

I think the jets are brass, I would expect any sort of extraction tool will do nothing but tear them up more, as the material is too soft to hold an extractor.

Put the screwdriver in the slot, and give it a few TAPS with a small hammer, then try turning it. If all else fails, there are a million Q Jets in the salvage yards.

Yeah, just would have to by another rebuild kit... $32 isn't much but it adds up on a limited income :(

Well I think I am done for with this carb

I soaked it good in PB and then tried tapping and unscrewing it and just but big chunks of brass come off

Too bad you're not closer. I have 2 sitting in the garage and I'd give ya one :-|

Thanks, lol. I got the carb for free.. easy to find I guess since everyone seems to hate them

I just need to get rid of this friggen Edelbrock.. the bubba who had the truck before slapped an Edelbrock Performer 750 on the stock manifold :eek1:

Wonder how hard it would be to find another one from a 75-79 car with a 350..

I don't hate 'em...I don't understand them, but I will eventually. When I got my current motor (a big mistake) it wouldn't run right. The mechanic thought it was the carb (Q-jet) so I replaced it with an Edelbrock 1406 600cfm / Vac 2ndaries. That carb is still on there, and it doesn't run any better than the Q-jet did. It took a lot of time for me to realize that the carb wasn't the problem--it was the motor it was installed on.

I'm gonna rebuild one of them at some point.

I got a wild hair tonight when it came to removing the jets.. I took a screw driver and tapped it into the soft brass a good ways and then just cranked and they both broke loose!

Going to buy that book.. for now I'm going to tear her down and give her a good bath in carb cleaner  I have a friend who's a GM Mechanic that's going to help me with the final assembly, so thankfully I'm covered there :o

Thanks guys!

ETA: If I went to the parts store, would they be able to get me a set of jets for tuning and the like?
