Depends what you consider "best".
Don't know as there is much in performance aspects different, but I personally think the later ones (not "square" in the front) are more refined and seem to tune better.
Major obvious physical differences of non-electric (CCC) versions are the fuel inlet location, choke style, and CFM. None are year specific, make specific, then year specific.
The ones I've dealt with off of 80's trucks seem to be pretty good.
