Working on the gf's truck, dropped a used 350 with a used qjet on top. Hooked it up and was trying to start it today and noticed something. When you open the throttle blades I cannot see a shot of fuel from the accelerator pump. Also the shaft the goes down into the carb, that gets pushed down by the pump arm, it appears that there is a little fuel weeping up around that shaft, and when you open the arm it sounds like air hissing out. Now, this thing came off a running driving truck (the carb) but its been sitting several months because Im lazy, does it sound like the accel puimp has died or what?

Also when I had the gf trying to start it while I was in position to twist the distributor, she would turn it over for a few secs then turn the key off and the truck would keep turning over for 3-5 seconds (starter still engaged, not dieseling). What the crap would cause that?

Its an 89 silverado but the FI has beem removed so it has the wiring system from say a 78 truck.

Oh I figured out why I didnt this the accel pump was working, its only spraying into the pass side bore and heres the weird thing, it will spray on one cycle of the throttle, but the next time it wont, then you pump it again and it sprays......wtf

The Q-Jet accelerator pump has a gasket/skirt; if that's defective...

If the starter is still engaged, the bendix is sticking (or whatever you call the rod that the solenoid pushes.) You could pull the starter and lube the thing, but given that it's a PITA to R&R the starter, I'd just replace the whole damn thing. Get yourself a Delco starter and put a heat shield on it, and you'll not replace it for a good many years.
